Stonewall's Spicy Chicken Style Jerquee
I've been on a big jerky kick recently, and I have to admit I am quite intrigued by the soy variations as well. While in a natural food market today, I ran across Stonewall's Jerquee, an all natural jerky substitute. I decided to try the Spicy "Chicken" flavor, and at just $1.69 for a 1.5-ounce snack pack, I figured I couldn't go too wrong.
The company recommends that you eat the snack "right from the bag" or microwave it for 10 seconds "for a hot, sizzlin' snack." I opted for the first option, opening the bag to find round nuggets not unlike large, meaty coins. I popped one into my mouth and was struck with a pizza-like, spicy taste and chewy flavor. I must say, I really liked my jerquee - it was both tasty and satisfying. I loved the spiciness and flavor in a snack that also had a great deal of protein and fiber. The consistency was chewy and somewhat dry, although not as dry as regular beef jerky.
So what's in this animal-free jerky? Defatted soy flour, purified water, soybean oil, autolyzed yeast, spices (onion powder, garlic powder, allspice, coriander, ginger, white pepper and/or red pepper), and potassium sorbate (a polyunsaturated fat used to preserve freshness). Each 42-gram serving of Stonewall's Spicky Chicken Style Jerquee provides 161 calories, 9 grams of fat (14% of the daily value), 2 grams of saturated fat (10% of the DV), 495 mg of sodium (21% of the DV), 13 grams of protein and 7 grams of carbohydrates which includes 3 grams of fiber (12% of the DV) and 2 grams of sugar. There is also 16% of the RDA for calcium, and 27% of the RDA for iron.
Taste-wise, this is a great substitute for meaty jerkys, but nutrition-wise, I would like to see less total fat and sodium. There are many other flavors, including original, bbq, tandoori, and teriyaki. If you're not vegetarian, then stick to Oh Boy Oberto Fat Free Beef Jerky. If you're vegetarian, then this is a good snack to start replacing some less desirable options. It's available on Amazon.com at $29.88 for a case of 16 (1.5 ounce packs).
