Shasta Diet Orange Soda
I have an affinity for fruity flavored sodas. Give me a 7-Up or a Sunkist over a Cola any day. However, I've found many diet sodas to be disappointingly bland or medicinal. I've had diet lemon-lime sodas that are lacking in both lemon and lime; diet grapefruit sodas sometimes taste just like Alka-Seltzer; and diet cherry sodas that taste like carbonated cough syrup. In the Orange department, I've been very happy with diet Sunkist. Wanting to find a tasty diet soda that avoided aspartame, however, I settled on trying Shasta Diet Orange Soda.
While diet Shasta Orange has a deep orange color, the flavor is decidedly off. It's not that clean orange flavor that diet Sunkist touts; it's more of someone's assumed flavor of orange - someone who's only ever tried orange in the form of Thera-Flu flavored medicine. It's sweet, and it has a slight orange tinged flavor, but it has a chalky aftertaste that I found repulsive.
As with most diet sodas, there are no calories in this. The ingredients are carbonated water, phosphoric acid, potassium citrate, sucralose, natural and artificial flavors, artificial color, potassium benzoate, caffeine, acesulfame potassium.
I paid $1.30 for a pack of six, which is about 40% less than for a lot of larger-name sodas; still, I probably wouldn't buy this again. I'll just wait until I get influenza and take some medicine to experience the flavor.
