Goya Low Sodium Black Beans

My new food obsession is Goya Low Sodium Black Beans. You may be asking yourself, "Why is she writing a review of black beans?" Frankly, I don't blame you - it's a little different from most of the other products reviewed on this site. However, I have recently rediscovered the joys of black beans, and just look at the pictures above to see all the things that can be done with black beans (click on each picture to go to the recipe).

One recipe that I did make that was wonderfully interesting was of a batch of black bean brownies, using the recipe at AllRecipes.com. I know that sounds strange, but these brownies turned out really well. They don't have exactly the same texture and taste as regular brownies, but you certainly can't taste an overwhelming black bean flavor, and these treats are insanely healthy, thanks to the black beans.

Goya Low Sodium Black Beans are wonderful for many reasons. First of all, they're cheap; a 15.5 ounce can runs a little over a dollar ($1.09 in my case). Furthermore, it's a nutritional superstar. Each 1/2 cup serving provides 100 calories, no fat, 8 grams of fiber, 7 grams of protein, and 10% of the RDA for iron, and only 5% of the RDA for sodium - compared to 19% in the regular version.

They're incredibly versatile (as evidenced by the uses in both chili and brownies; some people even add them to cake mixes, as strange as that also seems). My only small complaint is that, by themselves, they're a tad bland (blame the low sodium). Still, given that triple whammy of cost, nutrition, and uses (plus the fact that they're shelf-stable!), I know I'll be buying many more cans. I can't believe it's taken me so long to find these!

Black beans are a great source of protein for vegans.
The fact that Goya beans are low sodium is great!

I love black bean brownies. The trick is don't tell people you made them with black beans because they will automatically hate them. I think they taste more like a dark chocolate type of brownie

The wife and I are looking to reduce our sodium content in the house. You make this sound so delicious.

They are "lower sodium" not low sodium! Likewise our local stores only carry the regular variety. I have requested it, but they say there is "no market" for lower sodium products!
