Clif Chocolate Builders Bar

Clif Builders Chocolate BarClif Builders Bars are built with protein power in mind - 20 grams of it to be exact. The Clif Builder's Vanilla Almond Bar didn't have get the highest of ratings, so I opted to try the Clif Chocolate Builders Bar, to see if that flavor would be better. Advertised as an all-natural "cocoa dipped double decker crisp bar," it sounded too good to pass up. Plus, the fact that it was on sale for only $1.25 (down from $2.79!) was a huge bonus.

Like the Clif Builder's Vanilla Almond Bar, this bar was immensely satisfying, partly due to its size and also as a result of the satisfying protein and fiber. It tasted almost like a candy bar (and at 270 calories, you could eat a Snickers bar instead, although you wouldn't get the protein, fiber, and vitamins). I'm a big fan of Clif's two-layer system, comprising a chewy layer and a crispy one. These bars have a perfect combo of the two and the textures compliment each other nicely.

At 68 grams, this is a hefty bar. Accordingly, it packs a full 270 calories, which makes it more like a sizeable mini-meal rather than a small snack - and definitely not low calorie. There is also 8 grams of fat, 5 grams of which is saturated (12% and 25% of the daily value), no cholesterol, 230 mg of sodium (9% of the DV), 20 grams of protein and 30 grams of carbohydrates which includes 4 grams of dietary fiber (16% of the RDA) and 20 grams of sugars (nore details are at Clif.com).

This snack is not low-calorie and the saturated fat content is quite high for a bar, but for the protein, fiber and taste it provides, it's worth it on certain occasions, like as a pre-workout fuel, or on long bike rides.
