Amy's Mexican Tamale Pie
When I read the review of Amy's Kitchen Shepherd's Pie, I was intrigued - a wholesome, healthy microwaveable meal? I had to try one of these products for myself. Since the Amy's Mexican Tamale Pie was on sale for $2.79 at my local grocery store, I decided to go with that hoping it would be just as good as.
The picture on the front was appealing, and the ingredient list was pretty simple (94% organic), a mix of mostly pinto beans, tomato puree, corn, zucchini, onions, cornmeal). The first thing you should probably know is that this is definitely not large enough to be considered a meal; however, it does make for a good-sized mini-meal. I popped the tamale pie into the microwave to test it out. Unfortunately, I had a lot of trouble getting it to heat thoroughly - frustrating! I found that the sides would boil up and threaten to spill, while the center remained frozen. However, after a bit of trial and error, I was able to get the pie heated thoroughly, mostly by turning the power on the microwave down a bit. When it was finally heated, I took the pie out of the microwave to let it cool for a few minutes.
I cut into the corn meal polenta topping with a spoon and took a bite. The combination of polenta, veggies, and beans was tasty without being overly flavored or spiced. The beans were definitely my favorite part as the polenta was a bit chewy, but then again I'm not a huge polenta fan to begin with. The topping did pair well with the veggies and beans, though, so it wasn't a big deal.
Each Amy's Mexican Tamale Pie provides 150 calories, 3 grams of fat (5% of the daily value), none of that is saturated or trans fat, 590 mg of sodium (25% of the DV), 5 grams of protein and 79 grams of carbohydrates which includes 4 grams of fiber (17% of the DV) and 2 grams of sugars. here is even 15% of the RDA for vitamin A and 10% of each vitamin C and iron (more details at the Amy's Kitchen website).
Overall, this is a great snack, especially comforting on a cold, dreary day, and I plan on buying it again soon. It's also non-dairy and gluten free, a plus for those on special diets. Definitely worth trying!

This was good when I had it before. I paired it with a side salad which helped make it a whole meal
I've never tried this, but most of Amy's Kitchen products are very yummy!
I LOVE this. It's yummy and as Amanda said, a great meal if paired with a salad.
I've had this several times and never had a heating problem...maybe your microwave is out of whack. I think it makes a great lunch.
This is by far my favorite Amy's product. I've never had a heating problem either. Hopefully you remembered to keep the plastic on the whole thing. So, so, so good and with a salad it's a a filling meal.
