PranaBar Pear Ginseng Bar

PranaBar Pear Ginseng BarOn a recent impulse trip to my local health food store, the wrapper of a PranaBar caught my eye with this question: Are you fully charged? Promising the power of raw enzymes, PranaBars feature raw fruits and slowly cooked nuts and seeds which they claim gives you the nutritional benefits of enzymes while minimizing digestive distress. The name "PranaBar", it turns out, is Bengali for energetic day or day of life. Hey, I thought, I want an energetic day! Ever a sucker for marketing, I decided to purchase the Pear Ginseng variety despite the high price tag of $2.49 per bar.

Containing only almond butter, date paste, sesame seeds, dried pears, almonds, agave nectar, puffed amaranth and ginseng, all of which are certified organic, this was a good bar. It was moist but not sticky; sweet but nutty at the same time. I am a big pear fan and you can definitely taste them in this bar. For those of you that are familiar with LaraBars, this bar is similar in consistency, but maybe a little more finely milled with smaller bits of nuts and fruit.

Each 48 gram PranaBar Pear Ginseng Bar provides 220 calories, a whopping 15 grams of fat from all the nuts and seeds (23% of the daily value), only 1.5 grams of which is saturated (8% of the DV), 5 grams of protein and 21 grams of carbohydrates which includes 4 grams of fiber (15% of the DV) and 12 grams of sugar. Pranabars are all natural, unprocessed, vegan and free of soy, dairy and gluten.

Taste-wise, this was a good bar, but expensive. If these were cheaper, I would probably buy them again for an occasional snack, but $2.49 is a little too pricey for me. Did I feel fully charged after eating it? Not so much. It was pretty filling and all, but I didn't feel any different energy wise.
