Maple Grove Farms of Vermont Sugar Free Maple Syrup

Maple Grove Farms of Vermont Sugar Free Maple SyrupWhat goes better with pancakes than maple syrup? It's too bad a mere 1 tablespoon has about 50 calories - that translates into 200 calories (and almost 50 grams of sugar!) for a measly 1/4 cup serving. Yuck! Luckily, there are some sugar-free versions out there to lighten the load.

I came across Maple Grove Farms of Vermont Sugar Free Maple Syrup in the grocery store for $4.99. Expensive, yes, but given my love for pancakes, I was keen to try it anyway. Looking at the nutritional info on the back, I was highly impressed (and also somewhat nervous about the taste, as low-calorie toppings can often be pretty unappetizing). A 1/4 cup serving provides only 15 calories, 110 mg of sodium (5% of the RDA), 3 grams of sugar alcohols, and a surprising variety of nutrients (25% of the RDA for each thiamin, niacin, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, pantothenic acid, and zinc). If this stuff tasted as good as its nutrition data, I would be sold!

Alas, this maple syrup wannabe falls short. The 1st second or two after tasting it, I was thinking, "Wow, this stuff is great! There's a real maple syrup flavor to it." That lasted until the second the incredibly artificial flavor kicked in. Yuck! Yuck It went from so good to so bad, so fast. Plus, this syrup is much thinner than regular maple syrup, so it's not nearly a good enough substitute.

My advice? Skip this pancake topper and use one of the recommendations in our Pancake Syrup Swap. Check out the comments for even more recommendations.

Never a big fan of artifical sweeteners until about 6.5 months ago, in terms of maple syrup, I found that Smuckers brand also has a sugar-free syrup that tastes pretty good. I'm not positive, but I believe one serving (1/4 cup) poses about 20-25 calories, which isn't too bad. I recommend it. Also, I've read that as a healthy alternative to syrups, to microwave or heat strawberries over the stove for a naturally sweet syrup! Cheers.

Hey Melissa - cheers for Smuckers. We have a review coming up for their sugar free syrup and you're right - not too bad at all.

$4.99!!! Can you get your money back?

I heard that maple syrup tastes good in coffee. I'm skeptical.

Well, no offense, but duh...maple sap is pure sugar, and to claim that something is sugar-free syrup...well, that just doesn't make sense. Did you look at the ingredients? How many fake 70-syllable ingredients were in that? I'd stick with moderate amounts of the calorie-laden natural stuff, myself...
