Ricera Vanilla Rice Yogurt

Ricera Vanilla Rice YogurtIn the yogurt aisle at one of the more upscale supermarkets in my neighborhood, I spotted Ricera Vanilla Rice Yogurt, which says it is made with Organic Brown Rice and enriched with vitamins A and D. The logo of the Whole Grain Council (there's 1 1/2 servings of whole grain rice in each cup) , the Certified Organic label, and the low fat and non-dairy appellations drew me in. With all those health claims, how could I go wrong?

The brown color of the yogurt is extremely off-putting, but the texture was smooth and creamy, but the flavor was sickeningly sweet. At first, I thought it was a maple syrup flavor (nope, this was supposed to be vanilla), but as I continued to eat, I realized that what I was tasting was brown rice syrup, which I find far sweeter and more distinctive than maple syrup. A glance at the ingredients list reveals that one 6 oz serving of this has 20 grams of sugar - that's about 5 teaspoons!

The other nutritionals are similarly disappointing. Each 6 ounce serving of Ricera Vanilla Rice Yogurt contains a whopping 180 calories, 1 gram of total fat (2% of the daily value), no saturated or trans fat, 160 mg of sodium (7% of RDA), 3 grams of protein and 38 grams of carbohydrates of which 20 grams are sugars and 3 grams are fiber (12% of RDA). There is also 20% of the RDA each for Vitamin C, Calcium, and Vitamin D.

I'm going to assume that the market for this yogurt is for vegetarians (it's vegan) or people who are lactose intolerant - because it sure isn't the people trying to lose weight. I would recommend So Delicious Passionate Mango Coconut Milk Yogurt Alternative instead.

This cost me $1.79 and needless to say that I wouldn't buy this again. At this price point, I'd recommend just picking up a pint of one of our 8 ice cream recommendations. You'll get about the same nutritional value and twice the enjoyment.

20 grams? Man, I'll stick with my low-lactose plain greek yogurt, thank you.

I cannot have any dairy and was delighted to find Ricera. I find it delicious, creamy, and satisfying. I am on a diet and eat it, since it has only 1 gram of fat.
