Fage Total 2% Yogurt
Greek yogurt can be a great buy - it's a good sour cream substitute, and it offers a ton of protein - but some people find that it tastes sour and unappealing. In the review of Fage Total 0%, Tanya remarked that the yogurt was sour and acidic. I agree (although I think it's much better when you add some Splenda or honey), but I was determined not to give up on Greek yogurt entirely. I decided to try Fage Total 2% Yogurt, hoping that the little bit of added fat would help the flavor.
I picked up a 7-ounce container of the stuff for $1.99 at the grocery store (I think this was an anomaly, and most single-serving containers are 6 ounces, but the nutrition stats listed here are for the 7-ounce size). It was certainly more expensive than other yogurts, but I was willing to pony up the extra cash in an attempt to satisfy my protein-rich, creamy dairy craving. I added a packed of Splenda and stirred, hoping for the best. As it turns out, the extra fat goes a LONG way in helping this yogurt's taste. While the 0% can be sour-tasting, the 2% is much, much creamier and more appealing. It was like eating a full-fat dessert but with a fraction of the fat and calories (Fage Total has twice the number of calories).
The 7 ounce container of Fage Total 2% Yogurt provides 130 calories, 4 grams of total fat (7% of the daily value), 3 grams of saturated fat (15% of the DV), 17 grams of protein and 8 grams of sugars. There is also 20% of the RDA for calcium. For just 30 more calories than is in the 0% variety, you get a lot more flavor.
I'm hooked! If you've given up on Greek yogurt because of the unappealing taste, give this one a try - and let me know what you think.

I like Fage 0%, but I mix one of the Fiber One cereals into it and this makes it taste a lot better. I'm planning on trying it with Kashi cereals next. I don't like most of the Kashi cereals because to me they taste like twigs but they might taste better mixed into the yogurt.
I hate to break the news, but plain yogurt is supposed to taste sour, that's why I use it as a substitute for sour cream. Fage is amazing, in that it is much thicker than other plain yogurts and thus is a perfect fit for toppings on baked potatoes, etc. Personally, I find putting splenda in it repulsive, I'd much rather use honey if I chose to sweeten it. Or mix in fresh slices of fruit.
Hey Meg - thanks for writing! I wouldn't necessarily say that plain yogurt is SUPPOSED to taste sour, because some taste more so than others. The reason I included that was to give people a heads up so they wouldn't be too shocked if they found that the Fage was very sour without sweetener. It does definitely make a good substitute for sour cream, both in terms of taste and consistency. Any type of sweetener works - pick your favorite!
For an excellent Greek yogurt, try Chobani. The fruit-at-the bottom Nonfat is awesome!
I love greek yogurt. I am with Ned I eat the chobani but plain no-fat. I buy it buy the case.
I agree with the last two comments, Chobani and Oikos is a lot better than Fage.
Does anyone know if they sell low fat or 0% fage in greece? I'm going there ths summer and wondering how hard it is going to be to eat low fat stuff.
Oh my goodness, Greece is the perfect place to eat well, but very, very healthy. Their greek salads are awesome. Had them every day for lunch. Sure they put olive oil on everything, but you also are exercising more because you really walk everywhere. In Athens, we walked to every museum, monument, etc Lots of stairs!
I think plain Greek yogurt is an acquired taste. Now, I get weirded out if my yogurt ISN'T tangy.
I stick with 0%. It's so yummy. If you live near one, check out Trader Joe's Greek yogurt. It's a total rip of Fage, but much cheaper.
I love adding fruit and unsweetened cacao powder. Mhmm!
