Kashi Chicken Rustico Pocket Bread Sandwich
I have been eyeballing Kashi's Pocket Bread Sandwiches for a while - ever since I first saw them at my local Piggly Wiggly. But, at $3.89 for ONE frozen sandwich, I just couldn't bring myself to commit. This past weekend though I saw them at Publix for $3.19 each and decided to give them a try. They come in three flavors: Turkey Fiesta, Veggie Medley and Chicken Rustico. Described as being "full of flavor in every bite, combining marinated garlic chicken, spinach, fire roasted red peppers, crimini mushrooms with Parmesan cheese and a roasted garlic, white wine tomato sauce", I settled on the Chicken Rustico.
Upon preparing said pocket, the first thing I noticed was that the package specifically says these are intended for microwave use only and are not to be prepared in a toaster or conventional oven. That totally cracked me up ... is something horrible going to happen to my little chicken pocket if I put it in the oven? Will it spontaneously combust launching Seven Whole Grains on a Mission all over my kitchen? Anyway, I was an obedient consumer and microwaved the pocket, as instructed, for 2 minutes and then let it sit for an additional 2. It's a decent size; maybe a little heftier than a hot pocket but more round in shape. The outside bread was soft, tasty and kind of herb-y, but the inside of the bread was a little squishy from the moisture in the filling which I wasn't crazy about. The filling itself was good but after a couple of bites it got too salty for me. On the package, the veggies look very vibrant, but not so much live and in person. There also doesn't seem to be as much actual chicken as is pictured [Photo Credit: VisualRecipes.com]
The pocket had a very familiar taste but I couldn't figure out where I knew it from ... and then it hit me. This pocket tasted like a cross between the Kashi Mediterranean Pizza and Kashi Roasted Garlic Chicken Pizza which, as a side note, I also find too salty. The bread is basically the pizza crust only in a softer form and the inside is like scrapping off the toppings from their pizzas and mashing them all together. Does anyone else find that a lot of Kashi foods taste alike?!
Each Kashi Chicken Rustico Pocket Sandwich provides 300 calories, 18 grams of protein, 4 grams of fiber and 8 grams of fat (12% of the daily value), 2 grams of which is saturated (10% of the DV). On the downside, one pocket also contains 670 mg of sodium which is 28% of the DV. Ouch. No wonder this thing was so salty. Kashi products claim to be minimally processed and while they contain long lists of ingredients, the vast majority are actual food.
I didn't love this, but I didn't hate it either. It's decent, but too salty and at $3.19 a pop I don't think I'll be buying anymore.

Ooo-la-la. It looks great! And I (unfortunately) love salty. I've sworn off Hot Pockets and this looks like a perfect, healthier alternative. I'll try it!
It looks a little small to fill me up! Kashi seems to be hit or miss, thanks for the review.
I have to admit, I am a Kashi convert. I love these. I think they have a unique "unprocessed" flavor. As for filling, I think these are the most honest compared to most other pocket sandwiches. At least there are recognizable items in there, not flecks of color that might be food.
