Justin's Organic Honey Peanut Butter and Natural Maple Almond Butter

While I was in the grocery store yesterday, I passed by a man offering free single-serve packets of both Justin's Organic Honey Peanut Butter Squeeze Packs and Justin's Natural Maple Almond Butter Squeeze Packs. What could be better than portable peanut butter? I snapped up a few and practically ran home to try both of them. Before I did though, I checked the Justin's Nut Butter website to make sure that they were not part a part of the peanut butter recall.

Justins Nut Butter

I tried the larger of the two, the Maple Almond Butter flavor, first. And let me tell you, this was delicious. Superb. Fantastic. How many words can I use to describe it?! The texture was grainy and smooth at the same time, and the almond butter taste, while not exactly the same as peanut butter, was delicious and complimented perfectly by the maple sugar. I ate this plain in order to fully appreciate the flavors (I cut the packet in half to get all of the delicious almond butter out as you can see from the picture).

This single-serve packet contains only dry roasted almonds, maple sugar, organic palm fruit oil, and sea salt. Furthermore, each 32 gram (2 tablespoon) packet has a portion-controlled 190 calories, 16 grams of fat (25% of the daily value), with only 2 grams of saturated (10% of the DV), no trans fats or cholesterol, 65 mg of sodium (3% of the DV), 3 grams of fiber, 4 grams of sugar, and 6 grams of protein. That's a lot of calories and fat - as is usual with peanut butter - so try and make this 2 servings if you must have your (occasional) peanut butter fix.

I then moved onto the Honey Peanut Butter packet, also portion-controlled at 17 grams (1 tablespoon) for just 100 calories, 8 grams of fat (12% of the RDA), 1.5 grams of saturated fat (8% of RDA), 35 mg of sodium (1% of RDA), 4 grams of protein and 3 grams of carbohydrates which includes 1 gram of fiber (4% of RDA).

Similar to the Maple Almond Butter, the only ingredients in this are organic dry roasted peanuts, honey, organic palm fruit oil, and sea salt. This, too, was delicious, just as Liza mentioned in her review. I had never paid much attention to the combo of peanut butter and honey (I know some people eat PB + honey sandwiches, but I've never done it), and I was impressed. I also loved knowing that I was eating only 100 calories' worth of peanut butter - scooping it up from a jar can get dangerous!

If you've read this far, I'm sure you've caught my drift - try these peanut butter packets! I got mine for free, but they can be purchased at stores like Whole Foods or ordered through a link on the Justin's Nut Butter website () at $5.78 for a 10-pack of peanut butter or $9.53 for a 10-pack of almond butter (+ shipping). Happy snacking!

This peanut butter contains palm oil. They have unnecessarily added saturated fats to this peanut butter- no wonder it tastes so good?! As for me, I'll stick to natural peanut butter and healthier fats.

Palm Fruit Oil and Palm Kernal Oil are two different things. From Eating Well: They both come from palm trees, but there the similarity ends. Palm oil comes from the palm fruit, while palm kernel oil is extracted from the palm seed. And while over 80 percent of the fat in palm kernel oil is saturated, only 50 percent of palm oil is, making it easier on arteries. Palm oil's reddish or golden color is a clue that it also contains a fair amount of heart-healthy carotenoids. Some research even suggests that the fatty acids in palm oil don't raise cholesterol the way saturated fats traditionally do.

I LOVE Justin's Nut Butter -- if only it came in jars!

Beyond the added saturated fat, that's an incredible mark-up for 'portion' controlled peanut butter and almond butter.

You'd do much better by your wallet to just buy a jar of the house brand stuff at Whole Foods or Trader Joe's and exercising some portion control

Susan - Justin's Nut Butter DOES come in jars! I found it at my grocery store (in the health food section), or you can buy it online at http://www.naturalgrocers.com/justinsnutbutters.php

Matt - I agree with the wallet-friendly option of buying a whole jar, but sometimes portion control can be really difficult; I also find it nice that these are portable. If that's not an issue, by all means get the jar!

Phileda - I understand what you're saying about saturated fat, and it's definitely a consideration, but I think as long as you keep an eye on the total sat fat you consume, having 2 extra grams isn't awful (especially with all of the health benefits that peanut and almond butter provide!)

I think this is the same peanut butter they sell at Starbucks, right? I've never had it because I prefer natural nut butters, but I like the little pouches!

IMHO, while this is good, I wouldn't give it a five on price - it's very expensive.

Wolf Goettin - I gave it a 5 on price because it was free for me :)

Ohhhh... Ellen, thanks! I don't buy it in little packets for portion control. I just didn't know it came in a jar! I can't live without Barney Butter and Justin's!

I love peanut butter - I've never seen this kind. I am now dying to try it!

I was shopping in Smart N Final today for cereal. The outside cover on the box of GOLEAN CRUNCH is misleading because it has pictures of BlueBerries on it. This was my first time to buy the cereal. I was suprise not to see dried blueberries in the cereal.
