So Delicious Coconut Milk Beverage
Turtle Mountain, makers of So Delicious products and Purely Decadent Ice Cream, are releasing a new non-dairy alternative to milk, So Delicious Coconut Milk. I was beyond excited to review this and it was one of the rare times I actually contacted a company to get a sample of a product since it's not in stores yet.
I'm lactose intolerant, and have had to be a lot more vigilant about it lately. I was actually using Rice Dream Rice Drink, when So Delicious Coconut Milk showed up on my doorstep. I tried it out the next morning with a bowl of cereal (Honey Nut Cheerios if you're curious - thought it would be something more exciting didn't ya!) and it rocks!

There is NO odd taste or off-flavors and just a light hint of sweetness. It was a little more flavorful than Rice Dream, and I totally love it. In addition to being dairy free, So Delicious Coconut milk is also soy free and certified gluten free. I've had it with my cereal every morning for the last 5 days and have been nothing but pleased.
A 1 cup serving of So Delicious Coconut Milk provides 80 calories, 5 grams of total fat, all of which are saturated Medium Chain Fatty Acids (a 'good' fat). There is also 6 grams of sugars, no fiber and 1 gram of protein. Additionally, there is 50% of daily recommendations for vitamin B12, 30% for vitamin D and 10% for calcium, magnesium and vitamin A. The unsweetened version only has 50 calories per cup and the Vanilla flavor has 90 calories.
The ingredients are coconut cream (water, coconut, guar gum), organic evaporated cane juice, calcium phosphate, magnesium phosphate, carrageenan, vitamin A palmitate, vitamin D-2, L-selenomethionine (Selenium), Zinc Oxide, Folic Acid, vitamin B-12.
The suggested retail price is $4.49 for a half gallon, which makes it just a little more expensive than Silk Soymilk or Rice Dream, but it is totally worth it. I'm thrilled to have found another alternative for us lactose intolerant folks ... and for anybody looking to cut out some calories, this is a great alternative lower calorie alternative to milk.

Any idea when it will be available??
@Eva March 1st - I know it will definitely be at Whole Foods, but I'm not sure which other supermarkets are going to carry it.
Perfect, my birthday! Haha, thanks.. I'm a huge coconut fan and I don't do lactose or soy; and I'm allergic to nuts!
Perfect, my birthday! Haha, thanks.. I'm a huge coconut fan and I don't do lactose, soy, or rice (any grains if I can help it); and I'm allergic to almonds!
Nine bucks a gallon? Ouch! Thank you genetics that I can still drink moo juice.
That said, I'll still try this. I like to try out all the milk alternatives in case my tolerance dims.
I am able to consume lactose, but we keep rice milk around the house for its potential for long-term storage.
Does it have to be refrigerated before opening?
How far out was the expiration date?
@Red the box of So Delicious Coconut Milk says good for 7-10 days after opening (and it has to be refrigerated), so no long term storage for this one.
Does it taste like coconut? I LOVE coconut and would hope that it had a good coconut taste. I heard their coconut milk yogurt doesnt taste too much like coconut.
Yeah, I'm curious about the taste too. I use Trader Joe's Light Coconut Milk, which is much higher in calories but is very coconutty; I can't imagine that this would have a very strong coconut flavor for such few calories.
I loooove this coconut milk. It is not too sweet and it has hints of coconut in it. I buy 3 Quarts at a time. Since I am the only one who drinks this at home. It lasts a while.
The yogurt aaaaaaaaaaah I cannot stomach. They are very popular and they sell very well. I tasted it the other day and I couldn't stomach it. Great milk though. The vanilla is great as well.
We snagged a couple containers at Madison Market here in Seattle and this stuff truly does 'rock'! I like soy but didn't want to OD on it so I tried this and it's fabulous. Has more substance than rice/oat/almond/hemp and is delicious in coffee too. Madison Market has run out so I'm hoping they restock soon!
I love the Vanilla. Natural Grocers here in tiny Saint George ,UT. Only $3.49ish. It's a great deal.
I tried the unsweetened Coconut Beverage. I so much wanted to like this, but was so disappointed by the total and utter lack of flavor. The only taste I received to my palate was a rather faint bleach taste.
Nice idea, poor execution. There's no substitute for the real thing. Make your own or just eat more real coconut.
I just bought this and tried it in my smoothies. I really love it! If you mix it in with other ingredients you really don't even taste the coconut at all.
I wish this item was sold in more markets instead of specialty stores. I have to drive an hour to Jungle Jim's in Cincinnati, OH to get this. Pretty draining.
Just brought this today at Whole Foods because I had a coupon.
I shook it up really well and poured. Yuk!! I wasted my $. Very watery taste. I should have stuck with my Almond Milk.
I'll put it in my smoothies. Otherwise I would return it.
Maybe this will work for someone.
I love the so delicious coconut yogurt and ice cream.
Don't be fooled though. Their coconut milk is a watered down version. Maybe they're trying to save $.
I'm sitting here now eating rice porridge made with it and I must say the flavor is VERY mild. I'm a bit disappointed actually. I bought it b/c I always feel guilty about the number of cans I use. I tried making my own coconut milk (which was yummy), but I didn't like the way the fat separated and wouldn't reintegrate once I refrigerated the leftovers.
I thought this might be the key, but I can't say that I'm going to be buying it again. The flavor is just too mild.
