Kangaroo Whole Wheat Salad Pockets
I love many different kinds of bread, but I don't have much experience with pita bread. Since I also prefer the earthiness of whole grain bread, I had to try these Kangaroo Whole Wheat Salad Pockets. The pita come presliced, so all you have to do is fill 'em and eat 'em or just eat them as is. Each pocket holds about 4 ounces of filling for an appropriate pocket sandwich size. It had a varied texture, which I liked, and was solid throughout so that none of the filling escaped from the bottom. The package emphasizes the honey in the product, but I wasn't able to detect any sweetness as I ate it.
One pocket has 80 calories, no fat, and no cholesterol. There are 140 milligrams of sodium (6% DV), 16 grams of carbohydrates, 3 of which are dietary fiber (12% of the RDA), and 3 grams of protein. In addition, the pita also has 6% DV calcium and 2% DV iron.
A bag of 6 pockets sells for $2.49 at Kroger. Though the taste of the pockets is not particularly distinct on their own, they provide an excellent foundation for a sandwich. The pita pockets have quite a bit of fiber and fewer calories than I had expected from the size of the pockets, which are both pluses to me. These pita pockets are not as economical as a loaf of bread, but they are good for mixing things up a bit.

how well do the sides hold up? I have a lot of pitas whose sides rip when I put the stuffing in.
Looks good. Wish we had these in my grocery store.
I thought they might be a little flimsy, but the sides of the pita were actually pretty sturdy.
