Barbara's Bakery Puffins Cereal
I often spend a lot of time browsing the cereal aisles, looking for something new and different for that all-important first meal of the day. Sure, I love my Kashi GoLean, but sometimes I have to switch it up - eating the same cereal day after day can get pretty boring! I've seen Barbara's Bakery Puffins before during my grocery store explorations, but I had never tried them. When I saw the review of the Peanut Butter Puffins in the archives, I decided to try the Original (I'm not such a fan of peanut butter cereals as I find them to be too overpowering). The fact that it was on sale for $3.49 from $5.19 didn't hurt, either!
The first thing I noticed was how much the Puffins remind me of Quaker Oatmeal Squares, one of my childhood favorites. They're both great finger food, perfect for munching on as a snack during the day, or with milk in the morning (or for lunch or dinner, too). The taste of Barbara's Bakery Puffins Cereal is mild, not too overpowering or artificial, with just a hint of sweetness in these crunchy "corn pillows."
The nutritionals on the Puffins are far more impressive than those for the Oatmeal Squares, though, with only 90 calories per 3/4 cup serving as opposed to 210 calories for a 1 cup serving in the Quaker variety. Each serving of Puffins also contains only 1 gram of total fat, 8% of the daily value of sodium (190 mg), 23 grams of total carbohydrates including 5 grams of sugar and a whole 5 grams of fiber (20% of the DV) as well as 2 grams of protein. The first two ingredients are yellow corn flour and corn bran flour, a nice change of pace from the myriad sugars listed first in the overly sweetened cereals that fill the grocery store aisles.
I would definitely buy Puffins again, and I plan on trying the Cinnamon and Honey Rice flavors as well. Which variety is your favorite?

I couldn't agree more! Puffins are a wonderful, low-calorie treat and breakfast. I was pleasantly surprised with their clean, crunchy texture and taste, given the small number of calories per serving. Original is my favorite!
The peanut butter is my favorite, but you probably wouldn't like it as it's very sweet.
I ADORE Puffins!! But only the Peanut Butter kind :-D
I like snacking on the Cinnamon Puffins. They are great nutritionally having 6g of fiber per serving. sometimes i add a little sweetener. very yummy!
Is it like the elusive "Corn Bran" cereal, which I think is by Quaker as well? I love that cereal, but it is hard to find.
I love Puffins!!!! All of them, the PB ones make for a great sweet treat.... and tehy sell them at TJs and S&S.....
I ADORE the PB Puffins!! Amazing sacking cereal and for yogurt toppings.
Cinnamon! But I love anything and everything cinnamon.
They do remind me of Quaker Corn Bran. I like cinnamon and original- usually buy both and mix them. I think the cinnamon hold up a little better in milk!
I love Puffins! I did not care for the Cinnamon flavor at all though- too strong of a cinnamon flavor. The original flavor is awesome!
love the pb ones!! my mom buys them for my little brother and i always end up eating them at home!
