Balance Almond Brownie Bar

Balance Almond Brownie BarWaking up at 6:30 AM on the weekend to attend a cheese making event with my Food Science club involves me hitting the snooze button multiple times, getting ready with the speed of light and grabbing breakfast to eat on my way to the car (fun, huh?!). Thankfully, I had recently purchased a Balance Almond Brownie Bar to not only satisfy my hunger, but entertain my taste buds.

I have never had a Balance Bar before, so I was excited to finally give it a go. As I was unwrapping my "meal on the go", I realized that it looked similar to a Larabar, with a uniform brown color with visible chunks of almonds dispersed throughout the chewy block. The texture of the bar is similar to a dense chewy brownie (definitely a plus), but has this obviously chalky background (the negative). The nuts added a welcomed, yet subtle crunch and the chocolate was ... well, sweet chocolate.

Each 50 gram Balance Almond Brownie Bar provides 200 calories, 6 grams of fat and 1.5 grams of saturated fat (9% & 8% of the RDA), 75 mg of sodium (3% of the RDA), 22 grams of total carbohydrates which includes 2 grams of fiber (8% of the RDA) and a not so great 17 grams of sugar. The first ingredient, a protein blend, provides 14 grams of protein. Unfortunately, there are quite a bit of corn syrups, honey and fructose go into molding this bar into a uniform mass and make it sweet. Other than that there are some ground almonds, toasted soy pieces and about 7 other ingredients making up 2% or less of the bar (not including the plethora of vitamins and minerals).

In the end, all I can say is that by consuming this bar and a medium sized banana, I was left perfectly content until lunch at noon (maybe the big bottle of water I had with me helped out too though). This cost $0.97 price tag at Target, and while the taste is not really great, there is a lot of protein and this may make it's way into my grocery cart again in the future.
