Tofutti Better Than Sour Cream

Tofutti Better Than Sour CreamIt seems like everyone is more open to the idea of eating less animal products these days. This is an easy task when swapping things like milk and burgers, but not so easy with other things like sour cream. I saw the dairy free alternative, Tofutti Better Than Sour Cream in the store recently, and they definitely hooked me with name. I only hoped they could back up such a bold statement!

I opened the container and my first impression was favorable. It looked just like the real thing. The texture and consistency was pretty much exact as well, and it tasted great too. I don't know if this is "better than sour cream" but it sure looks and tastes like it. Unfortunately for those who are lactose intolerant (and vegan), while this tastes just like sour cream, it has more calories than most "light" or "fat free" sour cream brands.

Each 2 tablespoon serving of Tofutti Better Than Sour Cream has 85 calories, 5 grams of fat, 2 grams of which are saturated (10% of the daily recommendations), 1 gram of protein and 9 grams of carbohydrates which includes 2 grams of sugars.

We reviewed Knudsen Fat Free Sour Cream, which only has 30 calories, but the taste was disappointing. In the comments, Naturally Yours Fat Free Sour Cream (which uses skim milk) was highly recommended and it only has 20 calories and 2 grams of sugar. A 12 ounce tub of Tofutti Better Than Sour Cream costs $2.99, but I recommend you use this very sparingly, and only if you need a vegetarian or lactose free sour cream alternative. We'll continue to look for one with less calories though.

I never tried the Tofutti Sour Cream but I LOVE the Cream Cheese!

Also, there vanilla ice cream isn't bad!

I’m starting to think that I should just skip the imitation stuff, and just live without certain things or find something else that’s still “real” and try that instead. I do however love the Smart Balance butter. It taste great and has healthier fats and oils in it.

I love this stuff! :) The only reason I don't eat it more often is that it is more calories than low fat sour cream. :)

Non fat or Low fat Greek plain yogurt tastes like sour cream to me. It has the right consitancy, too.
