Mr. Wheat's Honey Crispy Wheat

Mr. Wheat Crispy WheatI saw these on the shelf next to the elevator at Fairway on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. It looked like a clearance rack, but turned out to be a few newly arrived products. They were bags holding what looked like a cross between rice cakes and flatbreads. The label read Mr. Wheat's Crispy Wheat, and toted the contents as healthy, all-natural whole-grain puffed wheat snacks packed with fiber. The bags came in three colors corresponding to the different flavors: Plain (whitish), Sea Salt (blue), and Honey (yellow), which is the variety that I picked up.

Upon reaching the checkout counter, I noted that I was charged $2.29 for the bag with 16 rice cakes, which is a bit more than I would pay for rice cakes but definitely not a wild expense. On the nutrition label, the stats are listed, not for each cake, but for each serving, which was a surprising SEVEN of these large wafers, and only contained 110 calories and 1 gram of fat.

When I finally tried the cakes, they were not bad, though admittedly slightly underwhelming. The texture is somewhat like rice cakes, but thinner, and one large piece instead of a bunch of little pieces stuck together. They are very crispy, and kind of melt in your mouth like a wafer. The honey flavor gives them a slight hint of natural sweetness, I do, however, wish they were just a little bit sweeter, as I was almost reminded of cellophane when I first tried them. Because of this, I recommend being creative with them rather than eating them plain. They work great as a healthy base for toppings like cream cheese, nut butters, jelly or even make a yummy pizza with them.

In addition to the 110 calories and 1 gram of fat provided by each serving of 7 wheat cakes, there's also 24 carbohydrates per serving which includes 4 grams of fiber (16% of tge RDA) and no sugar, as well as 3 grams of protein. All flavors, by the way, have the same exact nutrition content, differing only in the amount of sodium. The plain and honey flavors each contain 30 mg (1% RDA), while the sea salt contains 130 mg (5% RDA). There are only a few ingredients in the Crispy Wheat snacks: puffed wheat (whole grain), water, sucralose, and salt (with the addition of natural honey flavor in, obviously, the honey flavored cakes).

Obviously, these snacks will not break the bank in any area, especially considering you have to eat almost have the bag to finish one serving. Although the taste on it's own is not stellar, the nutrition facts and versatility earns them a higher rating than I would give them as a stand-alone cracker, so use your imagination, eat up, and enjoy!

That's a good amount of fiber for rice cakes.

After reading this article, I had to try these cakes for myself. They are awesome! Great with a slice of cheese. I hope to see more of Mr. Wheat and some more variety as well.

I saw this article and got really curious what these are. i tried them and loved them. All my kids are hooked and love snacking on them.

Try the sea salt variety. If you have a hard time curing salt-munchies, add a bit more sea salt and you have a really low-cal alternative to chips that will actually fill you up a bit. I actually had to start ordering these by the case, since the whole family likes them.
