Minute Instant Brown Rice

Minute Instant Brown RiceWhen you switch from white rice to brown rice, there is going to be a difference in preparation time. Whereas white rice takes 25 minutes to boil and steam, its brown counterpart takes exactly double that. This means that you either need to remember to start your rice early, or make a lot at once and keep it refrigerated or frozen. So what about those nights when you want some rice quickly and haven't made any the week before? Kraft Minute Instant Brown Rice is your answer.

The directions differ from normal rice in that your bring water to a boil before adding the rice. Once the water is boiling, you dump the rice in, stir it around a little, cover the pot, and let it simmer for 5 minutes. After it simmers, you turn it off and let it steam another 5 minutes. Remove the lid and-presto! Perfect brown rice. I decided to try my rice with just a touch of soy sauce, as I wanted to get a feel for the rice before smothering it with other foods. The texture is a little chewy, but not tough or unnatural, and the flavor is nutty and mild.

One serving of Minute Instant Brown Rice (1/2 cup dry, which makes 2/3 cup cooked) contains 150 calories, 1.5 grams of total fat, no saturated fat, 3 grams of protein and 34 grams of carbohydrates, which includes 2 grams of fiber (8% of the recommended daily amount) . It also contains 15% of the daily value for magnesium.

A 14 ounce box costs $1.75, which is far more expensive than buying it in bulk - but you're paying for the added convenience of decreased prep time - which might be worth it to a lot of people. While I still prefer to make my own the long way, I'll definitely keep this on hand for a quick side on hectic nights.

So how does it compare nutritionally to old fashioned brown rice? Are those stats about the same, or are you losing something with the quick prep?

I have this in my cabinets for nights when I'm making stir-fry in a hurry. Love it!

Laura: You lose about 1 gram of fiber and 1/2 gram of protein per 3/4 cup. It's a trade off, really - less expensive and more nutritious versus pure convenience.

Thanks Wolf! I figured it was something like that :)

I have had Uncle Ben's instant brown rice - and this is something to keep in mind. I can't eat regular instant white rice because I get headaches from the chemicals used in the dehydration process (which are marked in the ingredients on the box). Uncle Ben's instant brown rice has ONLY brown rice as the ingredients. When I ate it - no headache. I don't know if this one is similar - but something to keep in mind.

i've wanted to try brown rice,but i was unsure.now i am sure...i'll try it!
