GG Scandinavian Bran Crispbread
GG Scandinavian Crispbread was a last minute add-on to my last groceries. These looked like nutrition powerhouse, with 5 grams of fiber (20% of the daily recommendations) per cracker. I have a thing for fiber, as in, I like it a lot. My absolute favorite cereal is Fiber One. On top of that, I eat fruits and veggies in massive quantities every day, and the pitas I get contain fiber as well. I get more than the recommended amount, unlike the majority of America, yet I am still somehow attracted to fiber-ific foods, and just new healthy products in general, and enjoy trying them out.
I had high hopes for this treat, but found myself fairly disappointed. I took my first bite, and cardboard was what came to my mind. Well, a mix of cellophane and cardboard. It was incredibly crunchy, dry, and hard to chew. My mouth was dried out in two seconds flat. I put some mustard on, which didn't help. Then I tried it with salsa, and it simply tasted like salsa on cardboard. When I literally soaked it through in the salsa, the taste and texture improved slightly, but I was still not impressed. It seems the only way to enjoy this is to have it heavily altered, damp, and with a good amount of toppings to mask the flavor. But why go to such lengths to alter something you don't like? I am of the staunch opinion that eating should be something one enjoys.
GG Scandinavian Bran Crispbread has one thing going for it, and that is its appeal to health fanatics. It caters to the low-carb crowd, the diabetics, the sodium counters, the fiber seekers, and everyone else looking for a pure, natural, healthy snack. It contains a mere 3 ingredients: unprocessed wheat bran, rye flour, and salt (and the salt content is just 0.4% of the daily recommendations). One generously sized crispbread provides only 12 calories are fat-free, and have only 30 mg of sodium, 1 gram of protein and 7 grams of carbohydrates which includes 5 grams of fiber (2 grams of 'net carbs'). With 5 grams of carbohydrates - there should be at least 20 calories in this, so I'm not sure how they arrive at 12 calories. Still, it would be less than 30 calories per serving which is still pretty good.
GG Scandinavian Bran Crispbread was only $2.09 for a pack of 10 when ordered online from Netrition.com. I will most likely not be buying them again because although they are nutritional superstars, it's does not make up for the horrible taste.

I agree! I wanted these to taste good, but I ended up smothering them in peanut butter to get anything palatable :(
Sad! Maybe you could crumple them in soup for something healthier than soup?
I mean crackers, haha.
Some companies don't count the calories in fiber in the total calorie count. For example, in the U.S., original Fiber One cereal lists a mere 60 calories per serving; elsewhere, it's actually 100. There's debate whether the calories actually "count" or not; but for now, in the U.S., companies can annex them.
I know! It always kind of bothers me, gr!
You can turn these into a lovely cake that I think tastes like bread pudding! Search for Scan Bran cake.
I've been using them for 5 years. I eat them with other foods (salads, sardines, eggs) the way I would have used bread, except that GG doesn't have the calories but fill me....
My friends tease me and call it "Talia's cardboard," but I keep my weight down, which is what counts.
I like to crack these cup on top of salad.
Have you tried the GG Sprinkles? I went to the companies blog and they have a bunch of recipes for Thanksgiving dinner that you can add sprinkles to for the fiber. check it out : http://www.facebook.com/pages/GG-Scandinavian-Bran-Crispbread/194248864953
They have a product now called Sprinkles. They are great when added to yogurt, salad, steamed vegetables, and cereal. My wife uses them as a bread crumb replacement for meatloaf, baked fish, and baked chicken. I agree that grabbing a cracker and taking a big bite is a little rough but after experimenting I have found that that sprinkles are great for adding fiber to most anything.
