Edy's Pumpkin Frozen Dairy Dessert

Edys Pumpkin Frozen Dairy DessertFor a wide variety of great tasting, moderately healthy ice cream, I get the best results from the Edy's (or Dreyer's depending on your area) Slow Churned Ice Cream (Edys Slow Churned Rocky Road Light Ice Cream is a must try). When Fall rolls around, I look forward to all sorts of pumpkin-flavored food and I have been searching for Slow Churned Pumpkin ice cream, but sadly, I couldn't find it in my local supermarket. Instead, I found Edy's Pumpkin Frozen Dairy Dessert and was surprised to find it comparable nutritionally to the Slow Churned ice cream.

The ice cream has a pastel orange color and little specks of spice. The texture is smooth and creamy, and the taste really is like cold milk meeting fluffy pumpkin pie filling. The first thing on the ingredient list is whey rather than milk, which is possibly why the product is a dairy dessert rather than ice cream and may also contribute to the fluffiness. The mix of spices includes cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and ginger and gives complexity to the pumpkin flavor.

One serving of Edy's Pumpkin Frozen Dairy Dessert is 1/2 cup and provides 120 calories, 4 grams of fat, 2 grams of which are saturated (10% of the recommended daily amount), 1 gram of protein and 20 grams of carbohydrates, which includes 15 grams of sugars. Edy's Slow Churned Pumpkin ice cream, has the same amount of calories but is a little lower in fat (1 gram less) and sugars (3 grams less).

I paid $3.50 for 1.5 quarts while it was on sale at Kroger. Nutritionally, the dairy dessert was pretty low fat but tasted great. I especially liked the subtlety of the spices. While I still like the Slow Churned ice cream, this dairy dessert is an excellent alternative. Unfortunately, Edy's Pumpkin Frozen Dairy Dessert is only available in September and October. If you're lucky, you might find some lingering in the ice cream section after that time, but if not, there's always next year!

The Dreyers version - Dreyers Limited Edition Pumpkin Ice Cream was previously reviewed too with equally satisfying results.

I hope I can find it! Ya'll have got me craving ice cream lately!

Thanks for sharing that. Somebody told me that ice cream manufacturers were going to start putting whey in! I hope to give this one a try!

i've found that anything labelled as "dairy dessert" is usually nutritionally comparable to the slow churned ice creams.

Pumkin is low on the GI(Glicimic Index) scale and would taste delicious. I'll have to try it.

OMG I LOVE THIS STUFF!!!! you can only get it up until Thanksgiving (stores started running out a week or two before the holiday near where I live).
I have 4 containers of this stuff in my freezer. Should last me a nice long while.
oh and btw the slow-churned (which is the kind I have) only has 100 calories per 1/2 cup (not too much of a difference I know, but still...)
yum.

They used to have a limited edition Gingerbread flavor too, but no more :(
