McCann Instant Sugar Free Irish Oatmeal - Maple and Brown Sugar

Oatmeal is one of my favorite foods. It can make a delicious snack as well as a satisfying meal, and it provides a good dose of fiber and protein with relatively little fat and calories. Although I normally eat my oatmeal plain with a little bit of salt (strange, yes, but delicious), I was looking to try something new and different when McCann's Instant Sugar Free Irish Oatmeal in Maple and Brown Sugar caught my eye. Most flavored oatmeal is loaded with sugar, so the fact that this product is sugar free was very appealing. Still, I found it odd that a "sugar free" cereal came in a "Maple & Brown Sugar" flavor?!
I emptied the packet into a bowl and added water, microwaving for about a minute and a half. The serving size was not huge, but it was big enough to be a good snack. I was a little bit disappointed by the taste - it had somewhat of an overly sweet, artificial sugar flavor, with strong maple taste that took a little while to get used to. After a few bites, I decided I liked it, but it certainly wasn't love at first bite (pardon the pun).
I flipped over the box to read the nutrition stats: 100 calories, 2 grams of total fat (no saturated or trans fat), 140 mg of sodium (6% of the RDA), 4 grams of protein and 18 grams of carbohydrates which includes 3 grams of fiber (12% of the RDA). In addition, each serving provides 20% of the RDA for many minerals, including calcium, iron, and vitamin A.
I purchased a box with 8 (1 ounce) servings for $3.99. I might buy this again to use in conjunction with my normal, regular oatmeal, but it definitely won't replace it.

If I were to review this product myself, (which I would've definately done if I was a frequent reviewer) it would've earned an easy 5 stars. This is my absolute favorite instant oatmeal variety. In fact, I purchase it by the case to prevent the risk of running out! For a sugar free instant oatmeal, both the flavor and texture are superb. The oats are heartier and chewier than many other brands of instant oatmeal. As many may know, Splenda is not heat stable, so heating it after hot water is added may alter the intended flavor. I've sampled the cinnamon roll and apple cinnamon varieties and they don't even come close to the deliciousness that the maple brown sugar variety supplies. Don't count this one out! Two packs with some light vanilla soymilk and I'm all smiles!
I have a fundamental problem of 8 servings costing $.50 each when I can buy Irish oats in bulk for much cheaper. Still, this is a much better option than Quaker's instant varieties.
I get the store brand sugar-free oatmeal, a variety pack with Aplle Cinnamon, Maple & Brown Sugar, and Cinnamon Roll...they all have the exact same stats, are great!
AND cost $2.29. However I got them on sale for $1.49 per box of 8...much better than $4.99.
WOw I'm a cheapskate, but I have to be if I want to splurge on the items that HAVE no alternative brands!!!
I like Mann's, I usually buy one of this for when I need a sweet treat, but mostly use the cheaper bulk idea. And salt is a great accompaniment with oatmeal! I hear you there!
