South Beach Living Crispy Meal Bar: Chocolate Peanut Butter
There are many nutrition bars out there on the supermarket shelves, and it can be difficult to know which ones are glorified candy bars, and which ones actually provide a little extra nutrition, don't provide too many calories and will be somewhat filling - that's like the ultimate trio to me in all my foods. South Beach Living says their Meal Bars are, "a nutritious way to satisfy hunger." We'll see about that!
I sampled the Chocolate Peanut Butter and wow! This bar was great. It weighs in at a hefty 60 grams, which is much bigger than your average bar. The texture was crispy, yet not rock hard (think Rice Krispy-ish). The bottom was coated with a chocolate layer that actually tastes like real chocolate and the peanut butter flavor packed a real punch. Reading the label I was surprised to find that the flavor comes from real peanut butter.
As far as nutrition goes, one South Beach Living Crispy Chocolate Peanut Butter Bar provides 210 calories, and considering the size, I think that is pretty reasonable. There is also 7 grams of total fat and 3 grams of saturated fat (11% and 15% of the RDA), no trans fat or cholesterol, a whopping 19 grams of protein and 26 grams of total carbohydrates which includes 24% of the RDA for fiber (6 grams). Each bar is also fortified with at least a quarter of your daily vitamin and mineral needs. Not bad at all.
With South Beach products, the fat tends to be a little on the high side, but this bar will make a filling snack and is a good source of protein and fiber - something not always found in other bars. I paid $1.79 for one bar which is a little pricey, so look out for coupons. The bars are meant to replace a meal, which I probably wouldn't recommend, but it is a definite 'go' in my book as far as snacking! I can't wait to try the other flavors!

These bars contain Maltitol, which is a sugar alcohol. Some people are sensitive to sugar alcohols and they cause digestive problems, so be careful if you buy these.
Thanks Kim. I tend to be sensitive over time to sugar alcohols - like a cumulative effect.
I am very sensitive to sugar alcohols, but for some reason these bars do not bother me at all. They're very filling thanks to the fiber, and are definitely good for the days I can't get away from the office for lunch. I agree that the chocolate peanut butter flavor is quite yummy!
You should also note that as far as "digestiable carbs" go (this is the main Carb number minus the sugar alcohol and the fiber) is only 3. Thus these bars are not only delicious, but low in Carbs as well.
So...imagine my surprise last week when at every store I visited, there were NO Crispy Meal Bars! Now, there are New Better Taste! (NOT) New Lower Price (they cut them from 2.10oz(60g) to 1.76 oz(50g!) I eat one of these every single morning with a banana and I'm good from 8:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. and that includes a full hour of Jazzercise aerobics. This is NOT the same bar! grrrr.
