Cheerios: Berry Burst Cheerios
Gone are the days when only plain or Honey Nut Cheerios were available. Now, there are 9 varieties and counting! Although I have not been particularly impressed with Yogurt Burst, Fruity Cheerios, or Apple Cinnamon, the new Berry Burst Cheerios caught my eye and I decided to give it a try - mostly because it's relatively low in calories with each ¾ cup serving providing only 100 calories. Also, I liked the fact that there were actual freeze dried berries included in the mix, rather that just the "flavor" of berries.
What I got was an excellent cereal, which worked well with added skim milk, or as a stand alone snack, or when mixed with my favorite vanilla yogurt. The dried blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries are sweet without being overpowering, and the O's are reminiscent of the good ole yellow box of Cheerios. When milk is added, the cereal holds up fairly well in terms of the "crunch factor" and the berries turn the milk a lovely shade of purple (also sweetening the milk in the process). Berry Burst Cheerios is certainly a worthy addition to the Cheerios line.
Each 3/4 cup serving provides 100 calories as previously mentioned, 1 gram of total fat (2% of the RDA), no saturated fat or cholesterol, 170 mg of sodium, 2 grams of protein, 2 grams of fiber and 8 grams of sugar. There are also 14 vitamins and minerals providing from 5 - 50% of the RDA.
Although Berry Burst Cheerios is a little skimpier on fiber than I would like, it suffices wonderfully for a snack when paired with a protein source (such as milk or yogurt). I paid $2.50 for a 10.4 ounce box of Berry Burst Cheerios, originally $3.99, but I had a printable coupon that gave me another dollar off. While this cereal is not packed with nutrients, it's definitely diet friendly with it's low calories and sugar content (even when you change the serving size to 1 cup). It's definitely worth it when on sale.

It would take a lot to pull me away from my beloved plain Cheerios, but I might have to give this one a try.
I actually eat a bowl of cheerios with some freeze-dried strawberries and bananas dumped in on many mornings. This sounds like a kind of similar concept.
