This week it is all about Ice cream, after all July is National Ice cream Month. Check out all our Reviews of Ice cream of the low fat variety of course. Try a flavor you haven't tried before.

I found Zevia at Mrs. Greens All Natural Grocer, and after hearing so much about it, I had to pick it up. Zevia is supposed to be the "Natural Alternative to Diet Soda." It's made with the natural, high intensity sweetener Stevia, which is currently considered to be an "additive" since the FDA hasn't approved it for use in foods & beverages (there is an excellent article on Stevia over at TreeHugger).

Nevertheless, Zevia, which is marketed as a "carbonated Stevia supplement" (because Stevia cannot be used as a food ingredient), managed to make it to the supermarket shelves. I picked up a can of the Natural Twist flavor. It has a lemon/ lime taste and a strong carbonated taste. I didn't detect much after-taste like the folks at Bevnet did, but there was a slight left over acidic taste on the back of my tongue - this might be due to the carbonation though. As sodas go, this would not be a favorite of mine.

There are no calories, and the ingredients are triple filtered carbonated water, natural erythritol, citric acid, natural flavors (lemon oil and lime oil) and stevia (leaf).

One can cost $1.30 - although the cashier tried to charge me $6.99 - for 1 can! I think people who would enjoy this are really concerned about artificial sweeteners, but still want to enjoy diet soda - are there people like that out there? Otherwise, the taste didn't wow me, and I much prefer Sprite Zero.

I've been looking for this! I really don't like artificial sweeteners-I honestly don't trust them. I once bought a flavored Dasani and became really dizzy and started seeing spots. I couldn't figure out what it was and then I looked and it had Splenda. I searched the symptoms and many other people reported the same symptoms. We're probably just hypochodriacs (especially since everything low carb just has to have splenda or sucralose-I don't know why) but better safe than sorry. Plus there have been many studies on the latent insulin response, the idea that our bodies don't just react to calories, nutrients, etc, but to taste, so that as soon as we taste the sweetness (esp. aspartame) our body prepares for a sugar rush even though it's not going to happen, and as a result we get hungrier. But I'm not sure why this wouldn't apply to natural 0-cal sweeteners.

@Aaron I have never had a bad reaction to sweeteners. I don't generally suffer from headaches - maybe once every few months, and I use Splenda rather often.

That said, I know other people have side effects.

My personal opinion is that I have a question sign next to aspartame. Other than that, I keep my eyes out for studies that may one day reveal conclusive findings about any other sweetener but until that day ...

Also about once a month, I try to eat all natural, no artificial sweeteners, no processed, lots of water.

I eat Splenda with no after effects, though I avoid aspartame as much as I can.

I've heard alot of people say that Stevia has an aftertaste, and the cost is quite high, even if it is healthier. Personally, I'll stick with my diet Shasta rather than hunt this soda down.

I just finished a can of Zevia. I went and bought a 6 pack of it, since it was on sale. I bought the orange flavor and it's not bad. Overall, though, I'll skip all the sodas and just do sparkling water. Healthier and personally I think it tastes better. Much cheaper as well.

I want to try this, but it's not in our area. Might mail order a sampler.
Pluses: no calories, a zero glycemic index (no insulin reaction known), and heat stable (aspartame breaks down into formaldehyde when exposed to too much heat).
Minuses: Expensive compared to standard diet soda.
With stevia you have to be careful with amount of stevia used. Too much and it turns bitter like licorice. Just add very small amounts till it's right.
