Trader Joe's All Natural Cape Gooseberry Fruit Bar

Trader Joe's All Natural Cape Gooseberry Fruit BarOn a recent trip to Trader Joe's, I noticed their line of all natural fruit bars. What caught my eye was that these bars are made by grinding the fruit into a paste and drying into this form that you see. No fillers or anything else has been added. There were some interesting flavors, and unlike fruit leathers and fruit roll ups, these bars have less sugar. I picked the Cape Gooseberry bar to try first because, honestly, this fruit was new to me, and what's the fun of being a food product reviewer if you aren't going to jump at the chance to try new things.

Cape Gooseberry is a naive fruit of South America (check out the Wiki article for more information), and the flavor of the bar was a delicious combination of tangy and slightly sweet. The bar looks like it has lots of tiny seeds but I didn't taste them and they certainly didn't detract from the taste - if anything it added to the natural vibe of the product. I enjoyed this bar immensely and would highly recommend it for a change of pace from syrupy sweet fruit (and fake fruit) bars.

Each 20 gram bar of Trader Joe's All Natural Cape Gooseberry Fruit Bar has 60 calories and 5 grams of sugar, which is less than Stretch Island Fruit Leather and FruitaBu Organic Smooshed Grape Fruit Twirls. There is also 25% of the recommended daily amout for vitamin C and 15% of the RDA for fiber (4 grams). I didn't expect to find fiber and this just cements this as the best fruit bar ever!

I purchased one bar for $0.59 and will definitely go back to buy more. This is probably as close to the natural fruit as I have seen in a bar, and without as much sugar as the others.

That sounds really good. But since it is pure fruit, maybe we'd be able to just make our own? Then we could add protein powder or granola or something. Have you ever heard of that site, http://www.youbars.com/ ? It sounds really interesting how you design your own bar but if it's that natural I feel like I could make my own (if I have time).

@Aaron. I've seen the YouBars.com site - where you can make your own bars. I've been meaning to place an order - but they are rather pricey - it works out to almost $2 per bar. I do like that everything there is naural though.

@heather - I haven't reviewed the other flavors here yet, but I have tried them - the Gooseberry is my favorite - Mango and pineapple are my bottom 2.
