Pepperidge Farm Baked Naturals Wheat Crisps
Pepperidge Farm has created a new, natural, preservative free line of snacks dubbed Baked Naturals and my first impression of their wholesome attempt is one of approval. After eating dinner, my family and I decided to skip dessert and head straight for the newly discovered Toasted Wheat variety of the Pepperidge Farm Baked Naturals Wheat Crisps (there is also a Zesty Tomato Herb version). We always have to try a new product the day that it is purchased (it's basically a law in our household). After swallowing our first bite, my mother and I both said (at the same time), "This tastes like Wheat Thins ... only better!" That is probably the very best way to describe them, but for the sake of the review, I will try to be more descriptive.
These tasty crisps possess an imperfect square shape - sort of rustic looking. The picture on the box accurately depicts this fact. Each cracker is a crisp and crunchy textural delight, embellished by the "air bubbles" that make an appearance on about 99% of the crackers (a few are more on the flat side). Again, the picture on the box is a great representation, but mine were a bit darker brown. The taste is just as phenomenal as the texture and appearance. They have a slightly stronger "wheat" taste than Wheat Thins and do not seem as salty. In fact everything about this product, from the irregular shape and rustic texture just says "natural".
While the taste and texture far exceed that of Wheat Thins, the nutritional panel looks similar with 140 calories, 5 grams of total fat (8% of the RDA), 1 gram of saturated fat (4% of the RDA), 240 mg of sodium (10% of the RDA), 5 grams of sugar and 2 grams of protein. What's the difference? The fiber is a bit more apparent, featuring 2 grams (7% of the RDA) per serving (17 crackers or 30 grams). Furthermore, the ingredients list is without a doubt superior, containing all natural wholesome ingredients (not necessarily a short list, but all familiar stuff). Lastly, whole wheat flour is the first ingredient.
I bought Pepperidge Farm Baked Naturals Wheat Crisps (Toasted Wheat) at Target for a reasonable $2.50 on sale. They are delicious and fairly nutritious as a snack. In fact, skip the Wheat Thins and other crackers and give Baked Naturals a try. You may just discover a new favorite.
