South Beach Living Garlic Herb Chicken

South Beach Living Garlic Herb ChickenIn February '08 Kraft changed the name of this line of frozen meals from South Beach "Diet" to South Beach "Living", in an attempt to appeal to a broader range of consumers (apparently men don't like buying 'diet' foods - more on that story from CapeCod Times). It seems that with the name change came a lower price because I was able to score this South Beach Living Garlic Herb Chicken for only $2.14 (at WalMart) - South Beach meals are normally more expensive than the others as I can never seem to find them for less than $3.50 even when on sale.

This Garlic Herb dish has "white meat chicken strips with garlic & herb sauce & green beans almondine." Almondine is a culinary reference to garnished with almonds. This meal is really nondescript - like what you would expect a typical tv dinner of the past to be. I liked the lightly seasoned garlic and herb sauce which was not too garlicy. The "white meat strips" were tender and tasty and the green beans finished the meal out nicely, but they weren't particularly firm and fresh tasting. I only got a taste of the almonds at the end. This meal was just 'okay' and certainly worth $2, but that cheap price is the only reason I would buy this again.

A serving of South Beach Living Garlic Herb Chicken provides 240 calories, 15% of the RDA for total fat (10 grams), 10% of the RDA for saturated fat (2 grams), 23% of the RDA for cholesterol (70 mg) and sodium (55o mg), 23 grams of protein and 10 grams of total carbohydrates which includes 2 grams of sugar and 12% of the RDA for fiber (3 grams).

The nutrition facts are typical of South Beach meals - low in calories and carbohydrates, but saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium are always omnipresent. This is not one of my favorite frozen dinners, but I do have a few favorites from the South Beach line, namely the Caprese Style Chicken with Broccoli and the Grilled Chicken and Vegetable Harvest Wheat Crust Pizza.

I love their pizzas but have learned to steer clear of the meals. They are some of the most bland things I've ever had in my life. The one exception is the Kung Pao Chicken meal. You should try that one. I think it is very yummy!

In general I am not impressed with the South Beach brand microwavable foods. First of all, the amount of sodium they use is highly unnessary! I tried their plain pizza and it tasted like I literally dumped a salt shaker out on my tongue. Also, I find their quality of protein (chicken, beef) to be under par. It is either fatty or too chewy or just unappetizing. Lastly, the taste is not usually very good. I am not convinced that South Beach works hard enough to use complementary ingredients which would get the best flavor in their meals.

I used to buy their deli wrap "lunchables" marketed for adults which were ok. The were small but I guess if you add a salad they could be satisfying.
