Amy's Organic Medium Chili with Vegetables

Amy's Organic Medium Chili with VegetablesAfter enjoying Amy's Organic Medium Chili (with tofu), I decided to try some of the other products that Amy's offered, so I picked up Amy's Organic Medium Chili with Vegetables.

I cooked up a batch and the first thing I noticed was the appealing aroma that gave me visions of a cowboy chili cook-off (or what I think one should smell like anyway...). There was just enough sauce to combine with the vegetables into a slightly thick chili with a kick to it. I would not suggest serving to a family full of little children, but it will not knock you out. Instead, it cleared my sinuses and left my mouth feeling satisfied. Jalapenos make an appearance in the ingredient list along with capsaicin, one of the active components in chili peppers [read more about it]. The heat factor in this chili is just about my upper limit, so I probably will not be trying the spicy version any time soon!

There was just one thing which made this a little less than spectacular - the texture. The red beans (the first ingredient and which made up at least 50% of the product) are soft, the potatoes are soft, the few carrots are soft ... see where I'm going with this. The only thing adding a bit of crunch is the small kernels of corn dispersed throughout.

The ingredient list for Amy's Organic Medium Chili with Vegetables shows 14 wholesome organic ingredients, all decipherable in each flavorful bite. One can is 2 servings (1 cup each) which provides 190 calories, 6 grams of total fat (9% of the RDA), 0.5 grams of saturated fat (3% of the RDA), 590 mg of sodium (25% of the RDA), 7 grams of protein, 8 grams of fiber (30% of the RDA) and 6 grams of sugar. Furthermore, each cup packs in 70% of the RDA for Vitamin A and 30% for Vitamin C.

I paid $2.00 for a can of this Amy's chili (after a $0.50 off coupon) and will definitely be buying it again. Towards the end of my dinner I mixed it with some rice I had on the side and it resembled jambalaya - I may need to buy it again for the sole purpose of adding some rice and shrimp to the cooking pot.
