Special K Chocolatey Delight

Special K Chocolatey DelightHave you ever had a cereal that was supposed to have fruit or something extra added to it but you could literally count the number of fruit pieces on one hand?! Well, it looks like Special K was paying attention to consumers grumbling about that because they produced Special K Chocolatey Delight cereal with a very generous amount of chocolate pieces. When I poured out a cup, I didn't have to hunt for the chocolate. They were there in abundance, with each piece being about 1/2 inch long by 1/4 inch wide - much bigger than a "chip".

Special K Chocolatey DelightThe flakes taste a little sweeter than regular Special K, and the chocolate really adds that extra special oomph to the cereal. By itself, the chocolate is a little bland and very chewy, not as soft as regular chocolate at all. Some reviews at Amazon.com say it had a waxy taste, bu that wasn't my experience. However, let's not get too critical and expect rich dark chocolate in a cereal. This has to hold up to sitting in a cereal bowl covered with milk without getting mushy, and this cereal (both the flakes and the chocolate pieces) does an excellent job of not getting soggy quickly in milk.

One serving of Special K Chocolatey Delight is 3/4 cup and has 120 calories, 2 grams of total fat (3% of the RDA) and 2 grams of saturated fat (10% of the RDA), 8% of the RDA for sodium, 2 grams of protein and 25 grams of total carbohydrates including 9 grams of sugar but only 1 gram of fiber. Which means, for a 1 cup portion, that is 160 calories, 20% of the RDA for saturated fat and 12 grams of sugar.

Sorry folks, there is no chocolate without the fat (at least in this case). The ingredients list start with rice and whole wheat, but there is partially hydrogenated palm kernel oil. so although the amount of trans fat is less than 0.5 grams per serving, if you gobble more than 1 serving a a time, it will add up.

A big 13.4 ounce box cost $2.98 which is a very reasonable price. Unfortunately, this has more fat than I would like in a cereal, so I would shop around for alternatives before buying this again.

Hmmm there is hydrogenated oil-can't see that as healthy at all

I thought this cereal was ok, but I prefer the Red Berries.

I have not seen this, but I would assume it's just as awful as the regular Special K. Chocolate can't always make everything good. Plus, if it does have fat in it with the oil, that kind of misses the point of having a "healthy" cereal.
