Pepperidge Farm Whole Grain Cheddar Goldfish Crackers
With all of the emphasis being put onto whole grains, many cracker companies have started offering whole wheat or multi-grain variations of tried and true classics. Unfortunately, this sometimes leads to disappointing textures or bitter aftertastes. Goldfish is merely fallowing the trend, but I must way, they've taken to it exceptionally well.
Everything that you love about Goldfish is still there; the sharp cheddar flavor, the crunchy yet somehow tender texture crackers shaped as cute little happy fish. I detected a mild wheat flavor, but it wasn't enough to overwhelm the cheddar flavor. They still hold up well in soup, though still get soggy after a little while. They naturally have a browner color than regular Goldfish, but considering the neon yellow hue of the original, this is a welcome difference.
One serving of Pepperidge Farm Whole Grain Goldfish Crackers (55 crackers) contains 140 calories, 5 grams of total fat (8% of the RDA), 1 gram of which is saturated (5% of the RDA), 250 milligrams of sodium (10% of the RDA), 20 grams of total carbohydrates and 4 grams of protein. Unlike regular Goldfish, it also contains 2 grams of fiber.
A small bag will cost you about $1.50, and a large economy-sized carton will cost around $5. I hope that Pepperidge Farms decides to release more flavors of Whole Grain Goldfish, as these are great crackers.

"The wholesome snack that smiles back until you bite their heads off!"
I know you probably didn't do a head to head, but do these have a noticeably different texture than the original a la white bread versus whole wheat?
I agree on more whole grain varieties--I wait anxiously for the day when there is a whole grain pizza flavor!
I commend Pepperidge Farms for adding whole grains to their products, but I do think it's worth pointing out that these are Cheddar Goldfish "made with Whole Grain". This means they are a blend of whole and refined flours, not 100%. I just think consumers need to be aware of the slightly deceptive "made with" wording!
Goldfish are one of my all time favorite snacks. I have eaten them for years, and was so excited when I saw the new Whole Grain variety! In answer to your question, Red, these new fish lose none of the crisp, crunchy flavor at ALL! They're wonderful!
Though I actually prefer CheezeIts, I eat the whole grain Goldfish quite often. More fiber, less fat.
They're quite tasty and the only difference between them and the regular is that the cheese kick isn't quite as strong.
Tanya, have you ever tried the spelt pretzels? There are two brands at Whole Foods (Newman's Own & VitaSpelt) loads more fiber and protein. I think they're actually better than wheat flour pretzels.
Red Icculus - I actuallly did compare these directly to regular. If I were absolutely pressed, the whole-grain crackers are a tad denser than the regular; however, I thought that the difference was so minute that it wasn't worth a mention.
