Birds Eye Steamfresh Whole Green Beans

Birds Eye Steamfresh Whole Green BeansBirds Eye Steamfresh Vegetables are packaged in a special custom designed bag. While microwaving, this special bag becomes a steaming vessel as it puffs up under the pressure of the steam created within the bag. Vegetables are steamed to a crisp, colorful and tasty perfection.

There is no question that you can buy green beans and cook them yourself, but I really like these as a quick, easy, convenient option. It's super easy to prepare - put the entire bag in the microwave and like Birds Eye says, the bag puffs up in the microwave as the steam gets to work. The green beans were not quite the "crisp tasty perfection" that Birds Eye claims, but instead they came out a little soft, which is to be expected since they were steamed, but also a little bland when eaten on it's own. Add some salt and other seasonings for a more enjoyable experience (I even added a little salsa and it was delightful)! This was also excellent when I mixed it in with Michelina's Lean Gourmet Roasted Sirloin Supreme (Michelina's meals which are cheap ($1 each) but not very filling).

Each 1 cup serving of Birds Eye Steamfresh Whole Green Beans has 35 calories, no fat, 1 gram of protein and 5 grams of total carbohydrates which includes 2 grams of sugar. The Green Beans are part of the Premium Selects line and comes in a bag which has 4 servings and cost $2.08. I considered the size of the bag a shortcoming for those of us single folks, but it seems Birds Eye is already on top of this, and have released some single serving pouches for Sweet Corn, Sweet Peas and baby Brussel Sprouts. Hopefully, they will do this with more veggies.

For those of us trying to include more vegetables in your diet (that's one of my New Years resolutions), here are a few recipes for salads with green beans from Kalyns Kitchen: Green Bean Salad Recipe with Hearts of Palm, Olives, Red Pepper, and Feta and Green Bean Salad with Greek Olives and Feta Cheese. And A Veggie Venture has put together a List of Low Carb Vegetables and Weight Watchers Points for Vegetables.

Ziplock makes one-time use steaming bags along these lines. You just add your own veggies. I have used the same bag a few times with no health repercussions.

Doesn't the bag make it exponentially more expensive than regular veggies?

I bought a bag of steamfresh cut string beans and almonds...and the string beans had a rich, green coler and also cooked perfecty! Maybe string beans aren't so tasty alone but I am happy with all of the steamfresh veggies I have tried.

wow, good reviews on this one? wow.

Thanks for the mention of my salad recipes. I haven't ever seen these "steamfresh" products, but they sound like a good time-saver. I must admit I'm hooked on the thin green beans from Costco (which are expensive, but worth splurging on!) They converted me into a green bean lover!

Those are tasty!

Also, hearts of palm are really bad. They taste good, but they are a danger to the environment. Do not eat them. They have to kill a whole palm tree just to get them.

Yeah I tried them and they are a great way to increase your veggie servings each day. Really easy to take to work and i eat it before my lunch so am less lkely to have a large serving at lunch.

I heard that some of the Bird's Eye Steamfresh Veggies contain partially hydrogenated oil read: Trans fat. Even though it says they have none, as long as there is less than 1 gram per serving. At 4 servings, there could (potentially...and I'm not saying that there is) be nearly 4 grams in the bag. Hmm...I didn't check the green beans, but I know it's true of the cauliflower.
