Western Bagel: The Alternative Bagel
How can you not love bagels? Chewy, toasted, loaded with cream cheese - a diet disaster for sure, but splendid in its guilty pleasure. The Alternative Bagel by Western Bagel, however, advertises all of the good without the guilt.
Allow me to say, this bagel is about 30% smaller than a regular bagel. This, of course, accounts for a calorie reduction in the simplest way - smaller portions. Still, the bagels are decently sized, so I'm not complaining - merely pointing it out. I tried the Cinnamon Spice variety and the flavor of this is superb, exactly like a bakery's cinnamon-raisin bagels, sans raisins. It's mildly sweet, with a pleasant cinnamon kick that's not overwhelming and a slightly chewy texture.
One of The Alternative Cinnamon Spice Bagels (57 grams) has a mere 110 calories, no fat, 210 milligrams of sodium (9% of the RDA), 6 grams of protein and 25 grams of total carbohydrates which includes less than 1 gram of sugars and 7 grams of fiber. Compare this to Thomas Cinnamon Raisin Swirl Bagel which has 290 calories and 20% of the RDA for sodium - but it is twice the size at 104 grams.
A package of 5 of The Alternative Bagels costs about $2.00 which is comparable to other brands. I would definitely buy this again. And don't get all crazy and put gobs of cream cheese on this Check out Laughing Cow Light Cheese or Philadelphia Garden Vegetable Light Cream Cheese.

I got the onion ones and really like them, but the "sweet wheat" have a slightly weird taste to me, and I haven't been able to finish them. I like the smaller size as well, because I don't need to eat anything bigger than my head--especially a bagel!
The western bagel has been
pulled out of So. Calif.
is there any way to buy online the bagels?
@ Carol: You can buy it online at WesternBagel.com

Love 'em! Half of one of the cinnamon ones with a bit of Better N' Peanut Butter and cinnamon is my favorite pre-workout snack early in the AM.
Are they available in the El Dorado or Wichita, KS area?
This is by far my favorite thing to eat on weight watchers w
weight watchers cream cheese. They are pricy though
are they available in NJ
These are wonderful bagels. I love all the flavors and they are not too tough to chew like some bagels are. I also eat them with Weight Watchers cream cheese. One half bagel with one half T. or cream cheese equals one point and is just right for me!
