SouthWestern Style Egg Beaters
This review was done by Lizabeth Burnett. Liz has a passion for cooking healthy foods which started out of a desire to lose weight. "Not wanting to turn to a cabbage soup and bean sprout diet, I started shopping and cooking more mindfully which helped me lose 50 pounds over the last three years. Aside from cooking, I'm currently studying to become a dental assistant and I work at the local library."

Southwestern style Egg BeatersI have been using plain Egg Beaters to make omelettes and scrambled eggs for a while because it's a healthy way to reduce calories. You can add any vegetables, spices, and herbs that you want to make your breakfast even more delicious. Still, the allure and convenience of pre-seasoned Eggbeaters was too much to pass up, so I decided to make my morning scramble with Southwestern Style Egg Beaters.

I poured them into my pan and liked what I saw: a nice orange tinge, and lots of bell peppers and onion bits floating around. I quickly whipped up some scrambled eggs and took a bite which unfortunately turned out to be decidedly underwhelming. While these Egg Beaters had a peppery heat to them, there wasn't enough of other spices which left it tasting very bland. No smoky cumin, earthy cilantro, or any other flavors indicative of SouthWestern type foods. It also needed more salt than normal Eggbeaters since the flavor was flat without it.

The nutrition facts for a serving of SouthWestern Eggbeaters are impressive with only 35 calories, no fat, low sodium (115 grams), 1 gram of total carbohydrate and 6 grams of protein. Compare that a whole egg, which has 75 calories but 70% of the recommended daily amount of cholesterol (read the review).

So you really can't go wrong nutritionally in eating them - enjoying them is a different matter. If you want to actually taste those vegetables, herbs, and spices, then you’ll need to add them yourself, because they’re not in the SouthWestern Egg Beaters otherwise. And $2.00 for a pint, it's certainly not worth it. I love adding my own vegetables, herbs, and spices to regular Egg Beaters and I will just continue to do just that.

You might want to try the "Egg Beaters With Yolk" (they have just a touch of real egg yolk for more flavor and fluffiness). I don't like regular Egg Beaters all that much. But the new ones with a touch of egg yolk are quite good! I had some for breakfast this morning. I cooked it plain, added a little salt and pepper, then added fresh salsa (from the market deli) on top; wrapped it in a tortilla, and instant, simple breakfast burrito to go! Yummy!
