Knudsen Fat Free Sour Cream
This review was done by Lizabeth Burnett. Liz has a passion for cooking healthy foods which started out of a desire to lose weight. "Not wanting to turn to a cabbage soup and bean sprout diet, I started shopping and cooking more mindfully which helped me lose 50 pounds over the last three years. Aside from cooking, I'm currently studying to become a dental assistant and I work at the local library."

Knudsen Fat Free Sour CreamFor me, a baked potato or a bowl of chili aren’t complete without sour cream. Of course, as the word cream implies, this is far from a low calorie or fat food, so when I saw Knudsen Fat Free Sour Cream for the same price as the regular version, I decided to give this a spin.

The first thing I noticed when I opened the container was the small amount of water at the top. This, especially with dairy, is generally a bad sign. However, I've heard that fat-free sour cream (as well as cottage cheese) occasionally suffers from this problem, so I went ahead and used it anyway. Spooning the sour cream onto my potato revealed a second problem - a definite gelatinized texture which was a bit wiggly, something sour cream just should not be. The writing was on the wall, so now I wasn't surprised at the taste. While it is sour, there is an unnatural sweetness to it and the cream flavor itself is nonexistent. The final blow? It seems as if all of the gelatin didn’t dissolve, because there's a bit of graininess detectable.

Knudsen Fat Free Sour Cream contains 30 calories, no fat, low sodium (25 mg), 2 grams of protein and only 2 grams of sugar. A tub will run you about $1.20. Is it worth that? Only if you’re absolutely desperate for a low-calorie sour cream stand in, and would usually pour sugar or Splenda into your sour cream. Knudsen Fat Free Sour Cream tries to be sour cream, but fails on every front.

Disappointing, but nice to know to avoid it. I have a fetish for sour cream, maybe sticking with the regular is the best idea; a treat for now and then.

I find the only fat free sour cream worth its salt is the one produced by Naturally Yours (the container has a cow pattern on it). To me, it tastes almost as good as regular. It does get a little runny, but it helps to just pour off any water that accumulates on top.

You know, that's strange because i LOVE fat free sour cream. I put it on everything. And i've never had this experience, other than the wateryness which you just kind of mix around and it turns out fine.

You should check the date on yours...i swear this is not normal.

don't really agree on this one.. if you're on a low fat diet, it's not a terrible thing to have. i didn't find it to be yucky at all.. just not so 'sour creamy.' yogurt would be a good alternative, though..
