Jennie-O Extra Lean Turkey Bacon

Jennie-O Extra Lean Turkey BaconSince consumers have started demanding healthier options food companies have begun trimming the fat (pun intended) and slashing calories. Bacon is one of the foods that's slowly getting a makeover as a result. Most brands are no longer the fat laden, artery clogging food that it once was - but it is hard to maintain that delicious salty flavor and smokiness which make it irresistible. Thankfully, Jennie-O Extra Lean Turkey Bacon has given us the best of both worlds: a great bacon flavor with a fraction of the calories and fat.

If you like crispy bacon make sure to microwave this, as cooking it on the griddle results in more of a beef jerky like texture. Cooked in the microwave, the bacon comes out pleasantly crisp and crunchy, with no greasiness whatsoever. It has the usual salty taste, though it's not overpowering, like a good uncured bacon should be. While this does lack the smokiness of most of the pork bacons that I've eaten, I'm more than willing to overlook it for the calories saved.

A 12 ounce package of Jennie-O Extra Lean Turkey Bacon package will run you about $2.12. One slice of bacon has a mere 20 calories, 0.5 grams of total fat which is 1% of the RDA, no saturated fat, 5% of the RDA for cholestero (15 milligrams), 3 grams of protein and 5% of the RDA for sodium (140 milligrams).

I love Jennie-O - it's great for breakfast, use in salads and sandwiches - and whatever else you use bacon for. The amount of sodium gets more significant with the more slices of bacon you eat (3 slices and you're already at 15% of your daily requirement), so just watch your portion. Another turkey bacon to check out is Louis Rich Turkey Bacon (read the review) - but that has a little more fat and sodium.

I thought this bacon was fine, but my husband hated it. So we eat the Louis Rich kind, still a far better alternative to regular bacon and both of us like that option!

Jenny O has great ground turkey and marinated turkey breast loins but they missed the mark with their turkey bacon. Honestly, I preferred the taste and texture of Louis Rich brand.
