Trader Joes Matcha Green Tea Lowfat Yogurt
Matcha is a fine, brightly colored green tea powder made from the youngest tea leaves picked during the first few harvesting days. If you like lightly sweetened yogurts, then you will like this. The yogurt is a vibrant green color, and has a smooth but not overly thick texture. But the fact that it wasn't very sweet at all was a bit of a shock to my system - yes I am used to eating the sweet American style variety and I like it that way. There is a discussion thread about this very yogurt over at ChowHound.com, and most folks were huge fans. One 5.3 ounce container of Trader Joes Matcha Green Tea Lowfat Yogurt cost $0.99 and has 110 calories, 2 grams of total fat which is 3% of the daily recommended amount, 1 gram of saturated fat (5% of the RDA), 6 grams of protein and 17 grams of total carbohydrates which includes 15 grams of sugar (no fiber). Plus there is also 25% of the RDA for calcium. I was also surprised that there is quite a bit of sugar in this, although it doesn't taste like it. The ingredients are skim milk, cream, nonfat milk, sugar, matcha green tea, live and active cultures. That's it - so there are no artificial sweeteners (and no HFCS). Matcha green tea is rich in antioxidants, but it does have caffeine (about half as much as a cup of coffee). While my taste buds don't have to be assaulted with sweetness for me to enjoy something I think that mixing some fruit in this would have really made it a little better - added texture to the blandness. Maybe matcha green tea with pineapples or matcha green tea with kiwi perhaps? One containter cost $0.99. I wasn't overly fond of this - and it has just as much sugar as any other yogurt, so I don't think I will be buying this flavor again. Comments

Lucerne at Safeway recently had three green tea flavors - Peach Green Tea, Mango Green Tea, and Plain Green Tea. The Plain was sweet, and tasted alot like green tea with honey in it. I loved the taste, but it was a bit watery.
