Sabra Supremely Spicy Hummus

Sabra Spicy HummusMy first introduction to hummus was by way of Athenos Roasted Garlic Hummus. I liked the Athenos brand as an introduction, but it didn't rock my socks. I've been experimenting with a few brands and flavors since then, and I eventually came across Sabra Spicy Hummus.

Now I'm not a fan of very spicy foods, so I really surprised myself by picking this up, but sometimes it pays to get outside of your comfort zone - and this time it paid off big time! Sabra put all the spicy spices in the middle of the hummus - which is the best thing they could do. What this means for us wimps is that you can slowly mix in a little bit at a time, thereby adjusting the heat factor to get it just the way you like it. This hummus is thick and has a smooth texture - none of the pastiness that I found with Athenos.

One serving is 28 grams (about 2 tablespoons or 1 ounce) with 80 calories, 6 grams of fat (10% of the recommended daily amount), 0.5 grams of it is saturated, 2 grams of protein and 4 grams of total carbohydrates, which includes 1 gram of fiber (4% of the RDA) and no sugars.

Sabra Hummus is a bit on the pricey side - it's available online from Amazon, com at $4.99 for a 10 ounce tub. There are 10 servings per container, so if you're on a diet, make sure you're not eating too much of this at once. I totally enjoyed the flavor, and although I think it is just a few calories too many per serving and I would buy this again - but I'm still on the hunt for a low cal, tasty hummus - any suggestions?

This might sound strange, but if you have a food processor, try blending it with a sweet pepper or two. This thins out the hummus (which I often find too thick) and will help bulk it up. Those seem like contrary things, but they're not. Be careful though, it will lower the shelf-life.

I'd reccommend Tribe Organic/All Natural Hummus. They have a variety of flavors and it's 50 calories per serving (2 tablespoons). The fat is also a lot less than Sabra at about 2-3.5 grams a serving. I normally purchase mine from one of my local grocery stores so it's fairly common to find. They also have a website- www.tribehummus.com. It's my favorite brand next to Trader Joe's. I don't know TJ's nutrition info, but theirs always tastes like it's homemade. Yum!

I'm a huge hummus fan and have been since I was a baby. Give me a hummus, turkey, tomato, lettuce, and sprout sandwich anytime! We also use it as salad dressing.

great stuff, great spice, but the creaminess threw me. it tasted rich, and i realized with the fat it actually was. still it was a nice treat, and if it's ever on sale again, I'd treat myself again.

Trader Joe's offers fresh-made hummus in the refrigerated section; the eggplant hummus is delicious and only 35 calories per serving, with equivalent serving size to Athenos and better nutritional facts (higher iron and vitamins I believe, but the specifics escape me.)
