Kraft Handi Snacks Sugar Free PuddingWhen Jell-O started making their sugar-free pudding cups, I discovered a new best friend. Great for thickening up smoothies/shakes, I stocked up on multi-packs at Sam's and sampled several varieties. So many flavors and only 60 calories each! However, Jell-O now has a new competitor in the sugar-free pudding market: Kraft Handi-Snacks.

Kraft recently introduced their own low-calorie, no-sugar pudding in three flavors: chocolate, vanilla, and caramel. All three Handi Snacks are tasty, and the consistency of this pudding is a bit thicker than Jell-O puddings: thicker than yogurt but thinner than ice cream. This pudding is also very very sweet, but I detected none of that distinctive aftertaste that many sugar free products have. To get rid of some of that sweet taste, I use Kraft Handi Snacks pudding to thicken my protein shakes - blend it with milk, ice, and protein powder (one of my faves is Aria Protein Powder for Women ).

Each 3.5 ounce cup of Handi Snack contains 50 calories (10 fewer than Jell-O's sugar free pudding), 1 gram of fat, and 1 gram of protein. Plus, each cup is gelatin-free so vegetarians can enjoy, and it provides 10% of your daily calcium needs. There are some nutritional drawbacks, however. This pudding has 7 grams of sugar alcohols in each serving. Sugar alcohols often appear in artificially sweetened and low-carb foods, and while they lower the calorie and carbohydrate content, they often produce unpleasant gas if consumed in excess (the excess part differs for each person (anywhere from as little as 10 grams) - but I have found the effect is cumulative - meaning, eat products with sugar alcohols everyday for a week, and eventually the stomach issues will rear it's ugly gassy, flatulence head)!

Kraft's sugar-free puddings can be found next to the Jell-O mixes in the baking aisle; they require no refrigeration, so they get points for convenience. These snacks are also affordable. I consistently see them sold for 99 cents at most grocery stores. While it is tasty, cheap, and convenient, I have a hard time justifying this "Frankenfood" for frequent consumption.

Can't be better than the Jello Sugar Free pudding. The extra 10 calories are worth it... BTW, thanks for clueing me on where all my sudden gas was coming from! ;)

Hi!

Just curious - how does a product get a lower overall rating than the average of the three criteria? Thanks!!

You're right - something got "lost in translated" It's updated to 3.5. Also, I probably should mention that things are not always on an equal weight basis (somethings are so horrendous, no amount of good nutrition will give it a good rating)!
