Clif Mojo Bars

Clif Mojo BarsClif Mojo Bars pride themselves on their clever blends of sweet and savory; it even says right on the wrapper "the sweet and salty trail mix bar." Since I too enjoy a mix of contrasting flavors, I decided it was time to take a temporary hiatus from my usual Luna and Kashi Bars in favor of Mojo Peanut Butter Pretzel, Honey Roasted Peanut, and Fruit Nut Crunch flavors.

Each was so good that after devouring the bars I meticulously searched the wrapper for any runaway peanuts or pretzel bit! The bars mainly appealed to my intense sweet tooth; the salty flavor was more subtle. Beware of the crumbly nature of Mojos; their texture is reminiscent of a loosely packed granola bar - not a bad thing, just not exactly a tidy snack. Also worthy of noting is the size of these bars. Part of the basis of their appeal to me was their substantial bulk. Each weighs in at 45 grams, which is quite a bit larger than say Pria or Balance bars.

Each Clif Mojo Bar contains 180-210 calories, 8-10 grams of total fat (12-15% of the recommended daily amount), 4-10% of the RDA for saturated fat and 10 grams of protein. They also provide a few nutrients: 10% RDA for calcium, 10% magnesium, and 15% vitamin E. The 11 grams of sugar are balanced out by the 3 grams of fiber (12% of the RDA).

While most ingredients are organic (70%), it concerns me that "organic brown rice syrup" is consistently one of the first ingredients listed on the labels of each flavor. Organic or no, sugar is sugar, and we all need to somewhat restrict our intake. Some also may consider these bars too high in fat. Although Mojos are higher in fat than many other brands, the fat is mostly unsaturated from the plentiful amount of nuts.

I purchased these bars at Whole Foods for $1.19 each and they are also available online from Amazon.com @ $25.16 for a pack of 24.

I would consider buying these again but only as an occasional change of pace due to their high fat content but they win points for their natural ingredients and unique flavors.

I love the trail mix flavor of these bars. Tasty, salty, sweet, chewy, plus great chocolate chips in the mix. Yum!

If you like the various Clif bars, try the Nectar bar in Dark Chocolate Walnut. It is absolutely incredible!
