Lifeway Nonfat Plain Kefir Cultured Milk
Having previously reviewed Lifeway Lowfat Kefir Probiotic Cultured Smoothie, I can now say that I drink kefir fairly regularly [read the review], calories and all - it's all good.
I decided to try the plain nonfat Lifeway Kefir with two things in mind: 1) the words plain and nonfat probably means flavorless, so I was prepared; AND 2) I wasn't planning on drinking it by itself anyway.
What I discovered was: 1) I was right. It has no sweetness whatsoever, and it has a tart, acidic taste - not what I would consider pleasant. BUT 2) this rocks in my Chocolate Banana Protein Shake. Using only 1/2 a cup of kefir, 1/2 a banana, a scoop of GNC Pro Performance Chocolate and Caramel Whey Protein Powder and some ice, I was able to get a 114 calorie per cup protein shake with 17 grams of protein AND a great taste (even if I do say so myself).
One cup of Lifeway Nonfat Plain Kefir Cultured Milk is a serving and contains 116 calories, no fat, 14 grams of protein and 15 grams total carbohydrate. which includes 12 grams of sugars and 12% of the recommended daily amount of fiber (3 grams).
One 32 ounce bottle (4 cups) cost $2.99. I have to say only buy this if you are planning on using it as an ingredient in shakes and smoothies - it really adds body and thickness in addition to some great nutrition. But I wouldn't buy it just to drink by itself.
Over at IntheGym.net you can find details of the recipe [link] and a review of GNC Pro Performance Chocolate and Caramel Whey Protein Powder [link].
