Eat Smart Baked Sweet Potato Crisps
Well, I still like the idea of "sweet potato" chips so I got to tasting. These chips are more crunchy and harder than regular chips. The lack of a salty flavor took a bit getting used to, but I am a person with a very high sodium intake. Once I got used to the fact that these were close to unsalted chips, I actually liked them. I think I would buy these again - although they are a little expensive - $3.99 for a big 6 ounce bag. One serving is about 25 chips (28 grams) and has 110 calories, only 1.5 grams of total fat, no saturated or trans fat, 13% of the RDA for sodium (310 mg), 1 gram of protein and 23 grams of total carbohydrates, which includes 1 gram of fiber and 4 grams of sugars. I also got a reply from the manufacturers (coincidentally the day after the review was puvlished): "The sweet potatoes are dried and ground into flour. This is done at our ingredient supplier. The flour is then mixed with other ingredients to make the sweet potato crisp." |

Sweet Potato Chips aren't literally made from "sweet potatos" most times. Technically, they're sweetened white potatos hence the potato flakes and large amount of carbs in the nutritional information. I learned this when I ordered sweet potato soup on our cruise only to receive sweetened soup with white potatos. The chef explained that it often causes a lot of confusion but that's what it is. I'm sure you could find real sweet potato chips (or make your own) which would be so much healthier. As for chips go, I think that the Light Fat Free BBQ Baked Lays and Doritos are much better tasting than the regular baked lays AND they're fat free!
