Stonyfield Farm Fat Free Chocolate Underground Yogurt

Stonyfield Farm Fat Free Chocolate Underground YogurtMost (if not all) of the products made by Stonyfield Farms are all natural or organic. Their mission is "to deliver the healthiest, most delicious and nutritious yogurts on Earth." But bear in mind that natural or organic does not equal low calories. In keeping with the theme of "Healthy Chocolate Review Week" I picked up the Stonyfield Farm Fat Free Chocolate Underground Yogurt to give it a try.

I wasn't sure why they called this yogurt chocolate "underground" but after opening the container, I had a reason for it - whether it's their reasoning or not. Check out the "before and after stirring" pictures below. It seems like the chocolate is on the bottom of the container, much like the fruit-on-the-bottom yogurts.

I wouldn't have really cared except that the color of the yogurt before mixing is a horrendous looking beige /cream / off-white looking mess - and it still didn't look much better after mixing. I really had to put some work into it in order to get a semi dark chocolate color.

But, many things that don't look particularly appetizing usually turn out to be incredibly delicious. Not so in this case. This yogurt just tasted ... off. It is slightly tart but also has a sweet chocolate taste, and those two opposing flavors just didn't work together.

One 6 ounce container of Stonyfield Farm Fat Free Chocolate Underground Yogurt has 170 calories, no fat, 4% of the recommended daily amount of sodium (100 mg), 6 grams of protein and 37 grams of total carbohydrates, which includes 12% of the RDA for fiber (3 grams) and 34 grams of sugars. That is way too much sugar for one cup of yogurt - and way too many calories - but thanks for the added fiber Stonyfield.

The 6 ounce container retails for $0.89 when purchased from Whole Foods. I can't see myself buying this flavor of yogurt again - because of the taste, too many calories and too much sugar.

Tanya,
I recently tried their Cafe Mocha Yogurt and had similar results. I did not consider stiring the yogurt though(never needed to do this with non organic yogurts). Have you tried other yogurts from Stonyfield Farms? I am currently trying to find a organic yogurt that tastes as good as the nonorganic yogurts. Thanks.

Chocolate Underground sucks. Other Stonyfield Farm yogurts taste very good.

I actually like most of the organic Stonyfield yogurts with the more traditional flavors. The chocolate and mocha latte were probably the worst of the lot.

Blech. Have you tried the Cascade Fresh yogurt? It's sooooooo good!! It only has 110 cals and 16g sugar for one flavored 3/4 cup. No artificial sugars either!I won't eat any other kind after tasing this brand.

I had caramel underground last night and the lumpiness and wateriness of it freaked me out so much I just stopped eating it. Brown Cow is where it's at! Try the low-fat vanilla, it's amazing. It's also rarely in stock at my grocery store because people always buy it. FatFree isn't the same and CreamTop is too fattening, but lowfat is perfect.

This is my favorite flavor and I'm having trouble finding it lately. it's great wit choped walnuts mixed in. Are you still offering it?

chocolate underground is my favorite. I love it!

Ugh,I felt the same way. It wasn't yummy at all at least it was only $0.89 that was wasted. Very disappointing I really wanted to love it.

I love the Chocolate Underground in the full fat version. I know you were going for healthy here, though, hence the fat-free version. I've never had that type so I can't comment on the taste. I looooove the taste of the other, however.

I'm also not very afraid of the full fat version because I'm not eating any meat except fish a few times a month, so a little fat isn't going to kill me like it did when I was eating lots of other fattiness and meat. The strange irony I'm finding is that if I eat one of these in the morning and one in the afternoon, I'm eating less other junk. It actually gives me some satiety and the cream on top has a nice mouth-feel. I'm finding I don't crave some of the bad foods (like ice cream, candy and potato chips) Since I started eating these daily, I've lost 6 pounds. Go figure. I don't know that I could say the same if I was eating the fat-free type. I'm one of those people who feels deprived if my diet is too fat free and then I overcompensate and sabotage the whole thing.

Bonus is that the two cups I eat provide me with 24 percent of my day's protein which can be a nag when you're not eating meat. Every little bit helps there.

Chocolate Underground has a great taste. I love it!
