Blue Bunny Light 85 Pomegranate Blueberry Super Fruit Yogurt

Blue Bunny Light 85 Super Fruit YogurA couple of weeks ago, I was perusing the dairy case of Super Wal-Mart when my curiosity was peaked by the Super Fruit flavors of the Blue Bunny Light 85 Yogurts. The Super Fruit lineup boasts some pretty unique yogurt flavors like Pomegranate Blueberry, Raspberry Acai Berry, and Black Currant. I had never tried Blue Bunny Yogurt before, but decided to give the Pomegranate Blueberry flavor a go.

The next morning I woke up anticipating trying the yogurt. When I peeled back the foil lid, I discovered that the texture looked kind of lumpy, but after stirring the yogurt about 20 times, this lumpiness smoothed out but the texture was still not as smooth and creamy as I would have hoped. OK, now for the first bite ... Hmmm, I could really taste the pomegranate as well as the blueberry flavors, however, I did find the yogurt to be really sweet, artificially sweet to be precise. The Super Fruit yogurt definitely has that artificially sweetened flavor that some products get. Upon further inspection, I saw that the yogurt was sweetened with sucralose (Splenda). Maybe this just takes some getting used to, but after having had my smooth and creamy Yoplait Light for so long [read the review], this super-sweetness was a real turn off.
(* note from Tanya: How many times are we going to have to say that Splenda does not do well in yogurts before the product development people get a clue?!)

Another downer of the yogurt was that there were no pieces of fruit in it, I mean not even a trace of a real fruit in it. I like my yogurt to have at least a few pieces of real fruit to make me feel as though I am eating is not completely artificial.

Nutritionally, this yogurt is great. It only has 80 calories (why do they call it "Light 85 when the yogurts have 80 calories??), no fat, 7grams of sugar (11 grams total carbohydrates), and 7 grams of protein in a 6 ounce cup. Also, you get 20% of your RDA of calcium and 30% of the RDA of Vitamin D.

I will hand it to the marketing team over at Blue Bunny in saying that they did a darn good job with product packaging It is really catchy and enticing. Also I think it was smart of the Blue Bunny people to capitalize on the antioxidant fruit craze, however, I just wish they could have hit a home run with the yogurt itself.

Overall, the Blue Bunny Light 85 Pomegranate Blueberry Super Fruit yogurt was OK. I was really hoping that it would be awesome, but I guess a girl can't always win. I purchased the yogurt at Wal-Mart for the very reasonable price of $0.56 but I think I will stick to my good ole' Yoplait Light and drink POM Juice [read the review] when I am need my antioxidant boost for the day.

Really? I've tried them all and really loved them. Maybe you just got a bad one. Mine have been smooth, lump free. Aaaaaand....have had little itty bitty pieces of fruit. Hmmm?

I've liked all of the Blue Bunny Lite 85 yogurts and have found them to have more fruit than some brands. Black Cherry, Blueberry and Vanilla are my favorites. About the Splenda - that's precisely why I was happy to find Blue Bunny Lite! Have you seen how many yogurts are sweetened with high fructose corn syrup? That increases the carbs, plus HFCS is associated with many possible health issues, like weight gain, increased appetite (unable to satiate), diabetes, increased cholesterol and heart disease. A 2006 paper from UC Davis is titled: The Negative Effects of High Fructose Corn Syrup on the Human Body Excluding Obesity, Diabetes and Kidney Failure
[cosmos.ucdavis.edu/2006/cluster7_final_projects/Jefferson_Laura_High_Fructose_Corn_Syrup.pdf].
And, I believe it also has no Nutrasweet like some other Splenda sweetened yogurts.

Black Cherry, Blueberry, and Vanilla are also my favorites. I wish they would hurry up already and make a chocolate BlueBunny Lite. LOL!

I love to slice a crispy apple and dip them in my yogurt. A mega fiber loaded snack of deliciousness!!
