Cal-C Peach Mango Juice Beverage
Cal-C is a line of juice and milk combination beverages that contains "50 percent more calcium than milk (45% of the RDA), less sugar and calories than other juices, and a full day's supply of vitamin C in each 8 ounce serving" according to the company's website and label claims.
I wasn't sure that a juice / milk hybrid beverage was something that I would like, but I decided to try the Peach and Mango flavor and was glad I did (you can see that the bottle in the picture is empty). There was an overall pleasant fruity flavor and the milk didn't hinder the taste, but instead seemed to add an extra bit of creaminess and smoothness to the beverage. I did get a lingering sweet aftertaste in my mouth which is usually a characteristic when artificial sweeteners are used. It's like you have a little bit of syrup in your mouth long after you finished drinking this and it's not exactly a pleasant effect. I hadn't read the label too closely, so it wasn't until after I kept having this sensation that I checked the label and discovered that they use acesulfame-K as an artificial sweetener (they also use crystalline fructose). I guess that's why one cup (8 ounce serving) is only 70 calories.
In addition to the 70 calories per cup, there is also 14 grams of sugars, 100% of the recommended daily amount of vitamin C, 10% for vitamin D and 45% for calcium. This drink is definitely doing it for me in terms of nutrition. It is 15% juice (from concentrate) and 7% skim milk.
I hope by now that everybody, especially women, are taking a daily calcium supplement. A 64 ounce bottle (half gallon) was $3.58 at WalMart, which is a bit more expensive than some of the other juices. Overall I liked it and would buy it again - if the price came down!
