Turtle Mountain Purely Decandent Dairy Free Cherry Nirvana Ice Cream
This review was done by Ann H. In her words, "I am a 20 year old from southern Louisiana who is currently a 3rd year Marketing major at the University of Southern Louisiana. I am a bonfide "healthy product foodie!" My ultimate goal is to work in the marketing and development department of a healthy food company...like Amy's or Kashi."
I was a little nervous about what to expect appearance-wise upon opening the carton; Would it be smelly like some soy-based products? Would it even remotely resemble ice cream? I was quite suprised to find that the Purely Decadent looked exactly like ice cream! And a GOOD quality ice cream at that - none of those annoying little hard ice crystals or anything on top. I measured out the 1/2 cup serving (100g) on my kitchen scale because I wanted to accurately gauge the nutrition value and how satisfied I would feel with the reccommended serving. As I sat down on my couch indian style (because really I think this is the ONLY way to truly enjoy ice cream!) and dug in...I swear I could have melted right there into a little pool of bliss and died a happy woman! Whoever named this product "Cherry Nirvana" should be given a marketer's star of honor for actually giving consumers an ACCURATE description of the product, because there was a smorgousborg of glistening, plump black cherries everywhere! There are also rich chocolate flecks throughout and the black cherries just bursted in my mouth with juiciness! How, HOW I ask myself did the geniuses at Turtle Mountain keep these cherries from turning into hard frozen rocks??? Once I finished my 1/2 cup serving I was actually satisfied! As delicious as it was, I felt comftorable and didn't feel the need to sprint back to the freezer and devour the whole pint! Oh and I forgot to mention the best, OK second best thing (the taste is the best!) about the product...the nutrition!! Well, I mean its clearly not equivilent to chowing down on an apple, but compared to normal ice cream...say Haagen Dazs...it is leaps and bounds better for you! One serving is half a cup with 190 calories, 9 grams of total fat which is 14% of your daily value and 2 grams of saturated fat which is 10% of the DV (you can't expect to have ice cream without a little fat)! There is also 1 gram of protein and 32 grams of carbohydrates, which includes 5 grams of fiber (wow!!!), and 17 grams of sugar BUT, none of the sugars are from high fructose corn syrup or even corn syrup, the sweeteners read like: Brown Rice Syrup and Cane Juice. There is not much in terms of minerals and no calcium, but instead of mentally thinking, "Oh, I'll have some ice cream to get my 3-4 servings of dairy a day", you can opt for a more nutritious calcium source like skim milk or cheese or yogurt. And don't forget to get your $1.00 off coupon that we mentioned here. Comments

Christine said: Eh. I tried the regular Vanilla So Delicious flavor... Not bad; tastes like vanilly soy milk, which I like. However being un-dairy, and being that I'm not a vegan or anything... I'd choose regular ice cream over this because this lacks calcium. Even Skinny Cow ice cream, which has the added benefit of 3-4 grams of fiber a serving. |

190 calories for a 1/2 cup serving? For the same amount of calories, I can have 1 cup serving of dreyers slow churned vanilla ice cream. Now that is good stuff. Or MY FAVORITE, Dreyers Slow Churned Caramel Delight has 120 calories for 1/2 cup serving. I avoid it altogether cuz I can't just have one serving of that stuff because it tastes so good. That is why I don't allow myself to store ice cream in my fridge. I do get it occasionally cuz I love ice cream. It's my ultimate comfort food. Makes me happy.
