Diet Trash: Jamaican Beef Patties
Diet Trash is about the food products you might eat because you think you're doing something better for your diet, but you'll be surprised to know, they're not.
I really hate to put my beloved Jamaican Beef Patties under Diet Trash but I must. I am Jamaican and although I gave up beef a long time ago, I still indulge in the occasional authentic beef patty from the Caribbean bakery. A few days ago, I spied a pack of Tower Isles Jamaican Style Beef Patties in the local grocery store and a look at the nutrition facts nearly did me in.
My problem was with the amount of fat, 20 grams of total fat which is 31% of the recommended daily amount and 9 grams of saturated fat which is 46% of daily recommendations. There is also 390 calories, 10% of the cholesterol amount (30 mg), and 25% of the daily sodium (600 mg), in addition to 14 grams of protein and 39 grams total carbohydrate which includes 4 grams of fiber and 5 grams of sugars.
I love you patties, but all the fat has got to go - when are they going to start making patties with lean beef?

the crust is the culprit in the high fat fare
the typical jamaican style patty has 1.5 oz of beef.
Tower Isle put too much beef in their patty - that is the problem. more bread crums in other patties - lots of transfat - and you get much better health reviews.
I hardly hear of Jamaican dying from eating too much patty - unless they are gluttons. The chicken, calaloo, ackee, shrimp, hey man - you have more choices in jamaican patty than in hot dog.
i agree that i've never heard of jamaicans dying from eating too many patties. As far as the calaloo and ackee are concerned, the local Golden Crust has SO much oil in them that I only eat them on rare occasions. I'm not talking about the patties but the breakfast food. My mom used to skimp on the oil but my dad went all out. I admit that his food was better, but still... My dad did have two strokes and mom is still in good health.
try a Red Castle Bakeries patty
