Fage Fat Free Greek Yogurt
I recently asked readers to share a low calorie food with us, and got some interesting responses [see them here]. One of the foods listed was Fage Total Greek Yogurt so I thought I would give it a try.
On the strength of the recommendations, I bought a 16 ounce tub in Mrs.Greens Natural Grocer for $5.49 - twice the price of other yogurts - but I reasoned that I planned on eating a lot of yogurt in the week. One week later and most of the yogurt is still in the refrigerator. I am used to the slightly sweet yogurts with some kind of flavor - preferable fruit, but Fage Greek 0% yogurt puts a whole other spin on 'plain' yogurt. It is thick - I'll give it that, but it is slightly sour and acidic and closer to sour cream in taste.
Nutritious Junk just did a review, and she put it nicely when she said, "dont expect a flavorful explosion" and "it doesn't exactly taste like traditional yogurt you may be used to because Greek yogurt tends to be made differently." [link]. She liked it overall, but I can't say the same. I just can't get over the fact that there is no sweetness to it and that it was just like thick sour cream.
One serving is 1 cup or 8 ounces, and has 120 calories, no fat, 20 grams of protein and only 9 grams total carbohydrates from the 9 grams of sugars. The ingredients are simply skim milk and live active yogurt cultures! So it is definitely not bad in terms of nutrition, but I'm sorry to say that I will not be buying this again - unless I need to use yogurt in a smoothie or something. There seems to be quite a following for this yogurt though, so if you have had it, please leave a comment and let us know your thoughts!

use it to make tsasiki that is the best stuff ever and dip some pita chips into it man now i am getting hungry
Yeah I definitely can only eat the "sweet stuff". I like the silloiette sp? dannon varieties.
I eat this for breakfast most mornings. If you mix in some fresh berries and sliced almonds you cut the bitterness but keep the rich, cream texture. Very filling and yummy!
I do all kinds of stuff with this: sour cream replacement, tsaziki, smoothies, etc. I also like to mix it with a little splenda and cinnamon and serve it with baked apples, or just with a bit of splenda and fresh berries. One of my favorite foods of all time!
Thank you so much guys (and gals) for the comments on how you use Fage. But Max and graceless where are the tsasiki (tzatziki - sp?) recipes??
Meh. I love this stuff. But I can't eat it by itself. I always add stuff (ie, honey, fruit, or mix it with flax seed meal and dip fresh fruit in that).
Tanya, Tzatziki is soooo delicious. Check out this tzatziki recipe from Epicurious: http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/recipe_views/views/5403
I just put mix in peeled, chopped English/seedless cucumbers, garlic, and salt and pepper. There are others ways to make it, I'm sure. I saw someone making it with beets on the BBC the other night and it looked great. The plain Fage is also good if you put a dollop in tomato soup or any kind of spicy stew/soup. MMMM.
This yogurt definitely needs to have some splenda added to it to taste anywhere decent (I actually add 2 packets!)
No, no no! You never eat Fage plain! I eat it every day, but with 2 sachets of Splenda!
Other combos:
1 packet Splenda + Sugar Free jam or jelly
Splenda + a bit of decaf=coffee flavored yogurt.
I get the fat free, too, for 80 cals each.
I love this stuff. For breakfast I stir in a teaspoon of honey, the way I learned to eat yogurt in Spain. Some days I add a teaspoon of sugar and a handful of frozen berries. I also use it as a substitute for sour cream. And now I want to try tzaziki with it. Yum!
Thanks Abi and Max for the recipes! And I sure wish I had known about not eating it straight before I had it :0) I made a smoothie with it this morning though - and it was delicious!
I've been looking around for these... they are more expensive than I thought.
Trader Joe's: 1.69 for the 2% Fat Fage, which is preferable to the no-fat version by far. I eat mine with 0.25 cup of Grape Nuts for lunch. Fills me right up and tastes delicious. (Can't stand the taste of sweet yogurt anymore, gah.)
anyone know where I can get coupons? I eat 0% fage twice daily -- great for diabetics who trying to avoid high carbs. Fage has 6gto the others' 19g+

I work at a high end boutique hotel and have grown to love greek yogurt. If you drizzle a tiny bit of honey on top and a couple raspberries it's a fulfilling snack!
I eat at least 6 Fage 2% with honey a day.It is costing me a fortune though. But I love the creamy texture. And the 2% is not as sour.

You're supposed to flavor it of course! Add a tablespoon of jam or something next time.
I love Fage yogurt, and eat it daily. I add Splenda and blueberries to mine. Yes, you have to add flavor to it yourself. I find it delicious and chock full of protein. I don't think I could go back to other yogurts, as I would find them too artificially sweet.
I LOVE Fage yogurt! Super with honey and/or berries (cherry--yum!) -- almost cheesecake-ish in rich flavor. Just wish it were easier to obtain. Classic Greek desert is yogurt with honey & chopped walnuts...and of course, the wonderful cucumber dip (tzatziki)
I can't stand the typical domestic yogurts anymore. They are too sweet and... slimy. I hate the fact they use pectin or geletin to thicken and give the yogurt volume. If I wanted geletin, I'd buy jell-o.
For the commenter that said it's costing a fortune eating fage, try making your own yogurt. I've done it, and it's shockingly easy. You just need to have a good food thermometer to keep the temp at an optimal level. After the yogurt reaches your desired tartness, you can strain the yogurt to get that thick custerdy consistancy. It came pretty close the last time I did it
fage yogurt is excellent with fresh strawberries, sliced almonds and a generous squeeze of honey!
Who ever misled you to beleive that yogurt was meant to be sweet? It is only in this country that everything we put in our mouths has to be suggar ladden in order for it to be accpetable. Our taste buds have been over-exposed to sugar and are now incapable of experiencing the amazing nuances in the avrying levels of natural tastes in food as it is truly meant to be experienced.
I can't get enough of the stuff. I usually buy the 2%, but whatever I buy, I put it into a sieve on top of a bowl then in the refrigerator and just leave it there. It gets thicker and thicker, almost like mascarpone cheese. I love it plain, but for breakfast I cut up strawberries and mix them in. I wish it wasn't so expensive though!
Why didn't you add stuff to it like some sort of sweetener and some fruit? You don't just eat plain yogurt without putting something in it!
FAGE Yogurt is a wonderful product. I am lactose intolerant and I can't eat yogurt, that is until I found out about FAGE. I don't even have to use a Lactase Enzyme caplet with FAGE. I eat the 0% with Trader Joe's Apricot sauce. I wish FAGE had the 5.3oz with honey combo in the 0% instead of Total fat. It's worth the money. It's a meal in itself, especially for breakfast or lunch. I am a senior and this product helps me to stay "regular". . .if you know what I mean.
I bought this and tried it today as i heard it was the most delicious thing in the world. Oh dear, it was bland and it looked and tasted like cement paste!! (not that i had cement before)
I definintely wont be buying this again, i'd rather have alta dena's plain yogurt which is cheaper in price too
Love this stuff, Trader Joes also has a great greek style yogurt
Try it with fresh mango and Galaxy Granola (Not Sweet Vanilla flavor). Yum!
Hi,
I am not able to find one. can anyone tell me which stores carry FAge yogurt.
Thanks!
Hi,
I am not able to frind one. can anyone tell me which stores carry FAge yogurt.
Thanks!
i just don't get it...this stuff is so sour. i love the texture, buy why can't they add some flavor? i'll stick to dannon fruit on the bottom, skipping the fruit. fage...blech!
I use the plain for cooking, but they have 2% with cherries, strawberries and peaches that are absolutely the best. This stuff makes me love yogurt again, where other yogurts are just okay.
FAGE makes yoghurt with 0%, 2%, 5%, and 10% fat. Eating 0% yoghurt is like eating "healthy" whole-wheat bread (which tastes like white bread, with sawdust added). You want flavor, try the 10% yoghurt. Yum. Better than a candy bar....
I eat the Fage 2% almost every morning. With a little honey and some fruit (mango, berries... whatever!) mixed in, I feel like a queen. It's a luxurious treat and SO good for you!
I love Fage, but I can't eat it plain. If I can't find the ones that have the strawberry mix in's, then I buy the larger tub size, and mix in one regular Stoneyfield flavored yogurt to give it taste. I just love the consistency of the FAGE.
I get the full fat kind because it's so low in carbs and not too sweet for my tastebuds (2 weeks on Atkins induction will make you very sensitive to sugar!). So good with some DaVinci sf syrup or a little sf jam.
I can't eat Fage plain either...but with a bit of blueberry jam mixed in, it becomes a yummy dessert! Another great option is stirring in some sugar-free dry pudding mix; this thickens up the yogurt even more, making it almost like cheesecake. You're not going to find a high protein content like this with any other yogurt!
I am hooked on this yogurt.Looking to find deals on it though.
Ihave found that if you mix it with Stevia and unsweetended chocolate, it tastes like rich icecream..Yum..Love all the protein and no fat...
The 2% is even better..Creamer taste..

This stuff is fantastic and versatile. I like it as a breakfast or as a desert with honey or fruit or both. I don't understand how anyone could like the American varieties. I can't even call them yogurt. They are mostly corn syrup and gelatin. This is very healthy for your digestive system. I get it at a co-op and it has a better price than some larger stores. It be nice if it was cheaper, but it's not that well known. It should be!!!! Anyways, it has a fantastic texture and goes great with honey and fresh fruit. Whenever I buy it it's hard not to eat it all in a day.
I have to be honest... I have been eating the Fage for quite some time now however: There is a new Greek yogurt called Chobani. My friends told me about it, so I decided to try it. I think I have finaly found THE REAL GREEK YOGURT!!
Hey Iacovis, Where can I find that Chobani. I have heard a lot about it. They say it is so smooth and creamy, even the 0%. Which one do you recommend?
If you don't like sour cream, you would not like this. If you have a sweet tooth, cannot consider a meal complete without dessert, would rather snack on cookies than pretzels, cannot imagine drinking unsweetened ice tea, then add fruit or honey/sweeteners to fage, as has been described by many posters so far. I think of this is another dip for whole wheat pita, up there with hummus tahini baba ghanoush etc. I suggest adding salt, garlic, paprika, and most importantly crumble some fresh or dried rosemary in there, and let sit to absorb the flavor. Then serve with some sprinkled pine nuts and a dash of olive oil on top, alongside other mediterranean dips, olives, etc.
I love Fage! This daily fix can get real expensive but it's worth it. I eat the Total 0% with a little honey and walnuts or with splenda and berries mixed in. I can't eat Dannon's or any American made yogurt anymore.
I agree with Gina - I have no interest in American yogurt anymore. A little honey and some diced apples. I also sprinkle in some flax seeds to get some omega-3. I think the savory ideas - cucumbers, dill and salt/pepper sound great, too - like with cottage cheese.
I love this yogurt--it's pretty much a breakfast staple for me. As others have said, it does require a little 'getting used to,' but it's extremely versatile and nutritious. I think it tastes amazing when mixed with frozen fruit (thawed slightly), sliced nuts, cinnamon, sugar-free maple syrup, etc. The fact that it boasts so much protein is great, too--it definitely helps me stay full until lunch.
hey, did you guys know you can make your own "greeked" yogurt?
just buy (or make) some regular plain yogurt, and plop some (over a jar) in some cheesecloth, or (what I use, it's easier) a coffee filter in a funnel, and leave it a few hours or overnight in the fridge. Voila! Delicious greek yogurt!
I still buy Fage though, because it's fast and I love to sweeten it and dip strawberries in it. Yum!
Greek Fage yogurt is the best Since being in greece I can not eat american yogurt.Put lots of fruit on it drizzle with honey it is the best.sometimes I add bran flakes walnuts too!
I JUST FINISHED EATING A CONTAINER OF FAGE ALONG WITH SOME HONEY AND I HAVE TO SAY IT IS DELICIOUS, BUT DID ANY ONE READ THE NUTRITION FACTS THERE ARE 12G OF FAT AND 20 MG O CHOLESTEROL, I KNEIT WAS TOO GOOD TO BE HEALTHY
I love this stuff but have only tried it in a savory way. I mix it with Hidden Valley Ranch dry salad dressing mix and a little low fat milk for a wonderful extremely low fat salad dressing. I buy it in Connecticut at A&P and Stop & Shop.
I really like the 2% variety -- nice and creamy, but not as tangy as the 0%. I think it's yummy mixed with a bit of spicy Indian pickle, like Patak's variety. Good stuff!
The first time I tried Fage I got the Fage total with honey. It wasn't low calorie, and it had a pretty hefty amount of fat, but it was the best tasting stuff I've ever had. I was hooked. Fage isn't something you can just eat plain. I've started buying the 0% and just mixing in my own honey. I'm in love!!!!
Fage is good with honey, plus you can buy smaller sizes with strawberry. It is hard to take by itself unless you mix it with something.
I love it, particularly with honey.
Are you people NUTS!? FAGE (2%+) has to be the most amazing food I've ever eaten and YES sometimes I do dip into it PLAIN! It has such a rich, creamy, natural flavor, apparently it's only appreciated by very discriminating palates! I have no problem dropping near $30/week on Fage products. I buy the large 2% tubs and put honey on it and buy the individual strawberry packs. I will eat Fage sometimes more than twice a day. I love FAGE!
I really dislike sweet yogurts, so I never ate them. Now, I have this wonderful product with all its nutritional values every day. I think this is the best yogurt ever. Plus, I love that this is so creamy. Most of the yogurts on the shelf are more liquid. This is my breakfast for every day. I eat it with fresh blueberries or strawberries. I can add cinnamon, anything I like. I can even eat it plain, and I still like it. I looked on the internet, and they have this product with fruit: http://www.fage.gr/page/default.asp?id=428&la=2
I have not seen it on the shelves though. Anyway, thumbs up for this yogurt!
This kind of yogurt may be used as a spread. I like to cut up fruit with a little bit of soy milk and some cereal and you have a oerfect breakfast or snack. Great for mixing with buttermilk for a great tangy dip. Sugar Sweetened yogurt is not the best for you anyway.
After reading this and several comments I am wondering why everyone thinks there is only sweet yogurt in this country. Haven't any of you tried plain yogurt? You flavor it with fruit and sweetener or a tiny bit of fruit flavored drink powder. Nuts optional. Great tasting. The cucumbers etc sounds great too.
I am absolutely addicted to this yogurt!! I eat it every day with dried cranberries, chopped walnuts, and a good drizzle of honey. Heaven!!!!
"Why didn't you add stuff to it like some sort of sweetener and some fruit? You don't just eat plain yogurt without putting something in it!"
WHAT THE HECK? Don't people realize "plain" is the way yogurt has been eaten for millenia? Why is it that in non-yogurt-eating societies like this, we feel the need to sweeten everything up? (with Splenda, a Carcinogen, nonetheless).
Take it from me (and the rest of the world) Plain Yogurt is delicious and nutritious, if you add anything, add salt!
OH MY GOD!Never tasted yogurt this good, it was like whipped topping. I added 1 pkt splenda and a lil bit of vanilla and some papayas. I am not a fan of Dannon or yoplait etc. But this i will eat, also the protein in this is amazing.Super.
Fage is the "real" way yogurt is suppose to be. As a little girl my grandmother always made homemade yogurt..When I discovered Fage, it brought it back to me. Unfortunalty, sugar has been added to everything in our foods..Yogurt was not made to taste "sweet" It is yogurt, not ice cream..The true Mediterranean diet is the heathliest diet in the world..only when people "Americanize and supersize" with sugars and fats does it become what it was not meant to be...The sugar and fruit yogurts are not real yogurts.. When in Greece last summer we ate yogurt every day..We actually talked about how happy we were that we now had Fage to eat at home, because it is truly the best, just like in Greece.. We are having a Brunch for Mother's Day at our church and I know the Fage will be the hit of the foods. The people in my family and thousands of families who ate the healthy "unaltered" Mediterranean diet all those years died in their 90's from old age..enough said.....
I think Fage yogurt is the BEST... but I do prefer the 0% or 2% to teh "full fat" -- that's a bit too rich. Add some splenda & cinnamon and you got yourself a nice dessert.. or add some fresh fruit or honey... SO good!
Fage is my new favorite food. Although I do low-carb, I get the fat free version. I swear its like eating creme fraiche - w/o all the calories! I sprinkle a little splenda on the plain kind and eat it with toasted walnuts and strawberries. I also heard if you freeze it it makes excellent frozen yogurt!
mix it w/ honey or strawberry preserves (or any kind of jam you like) if you want sweet. so good! Throw in some fruit of fresh berries.
Please, can anyone tell me of the stores that carry fage 0%. I live in GA
Your best bet would be Whole Foods or Trader Joes,Kathy.
it sucked it made me gain 16 pounds
I work at Whole Foods and I must say this is yogurt is delicious. It's a lil more expensive than the American brands, but that's where my 20% discount comes in handy. I like to mix it with fresh blueberries, blackberies or chopped strawberries. YUM!
I am so happy to see that someone else commented on the number of people adding Splenda to this yogurt. That is the problem with the way people view food in America. Splenda is a carcinogenic...it is a nasty, sythetic chemical. Why would anyone taint a perfectly healthy (and delicious) food this crap? People are so concerned with the "fat" and "calories"...Splenda will halt your metabolism by contaminating your system with chemicals that get stored in your fat cells. Then your body will totally avoid burning those fat cells because your healthy tissue can't easily get rid of it. People focus on the wrong things.

I like the 2% variety of fage greek yogurt. I add 1 packet of splenda, slivered almonds and frozen blueberries.
I grew up eating this stuff and I love it! I cannot believe that people are adding splenda to this.......it's kind of like adding mint jelly on lamb (another thing a Greek would never do)
Why not buy Yoplait or some other brand that is cheaper and you don't add to it?
I live in the deep south and it is not easy to find Fage here. I finally found some at Publix ($1.99 for the small containers). Honestly, that was quite a sticker shock for me as I'm used to paying that much for 4-5 containers of Dannon or whatever. But, I really wanted to try it since I've been reading so much about it. So, I bought the 0% plain and the other (can't remember the %) with the honey compartment. I must say, I was very impressed. Once I stirred it up really well, there really is barely any difference between the consistencies of the 0% vs the other. Even the fat free was so thick that it was nearly like sour cream. I mixed a small can of diced peaches in with the FF and it was wonderful, as was the honey one I tried.
I hate to say it but I think I'm hooked. I'm not sure I can support a $14 per week Fage habit but I will definitely buy 2-3 per week, as a special treat. Other recipes I've read about that I can't wait to try: mixing Fage w/ cheesecake pudding mix and 1 tbs of fat free cool whip; mixing it with onion soup mix for a veggie dip; mixing it with fat free cocoa mix for a chocolate treat. Plus a lot of the recipes on here sound wonderful. I'm about to head back to Publix to see if they had the large container. If so, I'll buy a few :)
Fage is amazing! I picked some up at a local Trader Joe's because I had never tasted Greek Yoghurt. I couldn't believe what a gorgeous texture it had. I've outgrown the sweet manufactured yoghurt. I mix fresh fruit, whatever, honey yummmmmmm. This is perfect if you are trying to eat with more healthful habits. I AM HOOKED - as many possible stars **********
I do use it in place of sour cream
I tried Fage for the first time this morning. I have to say I loved the texture, the taste...I I bought the one with the cherry jam. I absolutely adored it..I swore I was buying this from now on. A few hours later I was terribly nauseous and was like that all day. I told someone maybe it was the Fage. She said she tried Fage and she became very nauseous as well. I am not lactose intolerant but I can only assume that maybe there are more probiotics in Fage that my system was just not used too. Has anyone else had this problem? Does it go away if I keep eating Fage?
I have trouble sweetening this yogurt, as I feel like the acidic taste is extremely overpowering- tastes a little like stomach juice, if you'll forgive the gross analogy. Yuck! I am so envious of those of you that like it, it is so loaded with protein and calcium I can't stand NOT including it in my diet! I think I will try the 2%, as some of you have suggested it is less sour. I have found a delicious way to eat it though - use it in the place of sour cream in recipes for dip. Fantastic!
Well after knocking fage yogurt on this board this morning I decided I really should give it another chance. Everyone else loves it, so what's wrong with me? Well, the purists out there who wouldn't think of sweetening their sour yogurt will have to forgive me, but I followed the advice of some other posters and added a package of pudding mix to a 17 oz container of the yogurt and- surprise! It was great! I used jello sugar free vanilla pudding mix to add to the yogurt. To top it, I thawed some frozen mixed berries in some splenda (which, by the way, has NOT been shown to be carcinogenic like so many have claimed). The yogurt was so rich, it's reminiscent of cheesecake, and the berries made the perfect topping. Try it! :) It really makes it more palatable.
I lived in the UK for over a year and we ate lunch at a little Pakistani restaurant all the time (take-away , best food I've ever had) and I'd get dal and rice, which is spicy yellow lentils and basmati rice. It cost about a pound ($1.20 US) and it was a huge container of food. I'd buy the full-fat (they didn't have the low fat versions where I shopped) Fage for about 30p a container at the shop next door. You eat the spicy dal on the rice and you pour the yoghurt on top, much like how we put sour cream on mexican food in the US. It was awesome. Nutritious, cheap, and what a great taste. I've been trying for the last few years to find anything close and I finally found Fage at the Meijers stores near me.
I'm in heaven again!
Okay, so this tasted like straight sour cream. At first I thought it had spoiled, but after reading other post, I found that this was not true. Adding a few fresh strawberries made an excellent addition. The next time I had it with a few spoonfuls of granola and it was fantastic!!!
Fage makes the best yogurt but the secret is not to buy the fat-free (0%) or even the reduced (2% or 5%) variety. The best one is the original "classic" with all the fat in it; 23 grams of fat per serving. Add stevia to sweeten if you wish.
Strained yogurt is a staple ingredient in nearly all Indian curry dishes. I use so much Fage for curry recipes that I often need to buy the largest container. It's great for marinating and baking with. 2% usually works well to be a bit on the healthier side.

I Lovee FAGE! It is my breakfast staple now. Where else can you get 15 grams of protein without having to stuff yourself with eggs and vegetables in the morning? And it's only 90 calories for a 6 oz! I just add splenda and cinnamon, and it is yummm!! It keeps me full until late lunch. I just have a fruit, coffee, and yogurt in the morning for only 300 calories :) works great :)
I love fage 2%- it is a bit expensive but a 16 oz container can give me 3 snacks. 2 simple recipes I like are:1) in a small covered bowl put 6-8 unsweetened frozen cherries, 1 tbsp. of chopped almonds and 1/3 container of yogurt or 2)1/3 c. frozen papaya or peaches, a bit of ginger and chopped pecans. I don't add sweetener and by break time the fruit has thawed, but the yogurt is still cold - yummy.
I am now totally off the "sweet" yogurts. They all contain High Fructose Corn Syrup! Bad for your health, death for your diet. Splenda - same thing! If you have to have your sweet treat, use honey or fresh fruit, you big babies!
This stuff is delicious, but so expensive that it's more worth the effort of buying a container of plain yogurt (or making your own) and straining the whey in a coffee filter overnight.
And not all yogurt is like this around the world. I imagine natural yogurt (the kind you can make yourself that is not nearly so thick as either Fage or store bought American stuff) is more common. Point being, most American yogurts shouldn't use the name yogurt.
The fat free version is only good for eating on its own if you like sour things. My theory is that if you like Granny Smith apples, you might like the fat free plain. Otherwise, go with another fat percentage or add fruit or honey.
A few days ago I bought Fage yogurt, at the suggestion of my dietician. It is great. I tried the Total 0% fat free. I like the fact that it is good for diabetics and is fat free and cholestrol free. I don't thing I will ever buy those sweet so-called yogurts anymore. This is what true yogurt is like - no sugar or anything.
It is a little expensive and I wish I could get coupons for it. Chobani vanilla is good too, and they have printable coupons on their website.
I buy it in Stop & Shop in Connecticut.
I don't have to bother making it myself anymore.
I just want to add, that I can't get enough of Fege. It is delicious, and it is very filling so I would think it is good for someone who is on a diet too.
If anyone finds out how to get coupons, I would be interested in knowing.
I read my last review and found a typo. Ooops!
I work for a company called "Natural-By-Nature" we are a organic dairy company here on the east coast. I had got some of the Fage yogurt to try as a sample.... must say i do like it better over the other yogurts
I hate yogurt, mostly because of the aftertaste. However, I LOVE sour cream, so I think I may give this stuff a shot...
Fage is simply strained yogurt. You can do this yourself by buying regular yogurt and putting it in a strainer overnight in the fridge. (I buy Dannon all natural fat free.) It drains off all the whey (liquid-y stuff.) It will be just as creamy, and the straining will reduce the volume by about half. That is why FAGE is so expensive-- it's like getting twice the yogurt per ounce because the there's no whey in it!
I love Fage total with honey. Mine was not the lowfat version so it had 250 calories. I eat it for breakfast but it is costly at 1.99 each. I may look for a larger container of it and mix with my own honey. It is amazing.
I really like the thickness but the tartness took some getting used to but I love it with honey, almonds and strawberries. yay !
love this stuff, very upset that I can't find it locally anymore, two local grocery chains stopped carrying it for some reason.
I don't particularly understand the comments about how this yogurt is sour and everything. Yogurt IS sour. Period. Yogurt is the product of bacterial fermentation of milk sugars that produce lactic acid. Acid => acidic = sour.
It's not strange that this product is sour, what's strange is that everyone is so used to sweets and sugary everything that anything really NATURAL, such as TOTAL, tastes odd nowadays..
Mancunian, you can't understand people preferring sweet to sour? It's not really that odd ,and yogurts have been sweetened for quite some time due to their sour and mute flavored nature so it's not a recent development.
I think the odd thing here is your inability to discern the difference between plain and natural.Just because something is sweetened doesn't make it unnatural or inherently bad for you.
I consider Fage 0 to be the Best of the Best for a fat free yogurt, sour cream and whipped cream substitute. I have been on a fat free heart-healthy diet for over three years and Fage has really done wonders in creating new recipes. I always combine it with other ingredients and because it is unflavored it is much more versatile.
I love the 0%... I add one heaping tablespoon of low sugar strawberry jelly to it, and its great!
tastes great with almond extract!
I also eat it with 2 packets of Splenda. I stir it up really good and it's so thick and creamy it's almost like dessert. In fact I do have it in place of my old favorite ice cream sometimes. Yum!!!
I looooove this stuff and I'm not even much of a yogurt person :)
It's awesome with honey, black walnuts, pecans, and sliced almonds.
Love this stuff, although I prefer the original recipe. I mix it with olives from time to time. YUM
The problem with most of our yogurt is the stuff added to it! We think we're eating healthy and we're ingesting something that either poisons us or spikes our blood sugar! I tried Fage today for the first time and I'm hooked. A tsp of honey and some frozen berries were wonderful. I'm getting a larger portion with more protein, fewer calories, and no chemicals! Can't ask for more than that! Why didn't I find this sooner?
I just read the rest of the comments and see that lots of people make tzaziki and use it in the same ways that I do! And here I thought I was creative!
lol, and sorry for all the typos in my comment above.
where can you purchase fage?
I recently purchased Fage 0% at my local store and besides the price I am hooked! At a huge tag of $4.39 a 16 tub it does put a dent in your pocketbook but the price is unsurpassed by the nutrition you can get from the product. I am a lapband patient and I am supposed to get 70 grams of protein in a day and I try and steer away from as many carbs as possible and with Fage it is a great possibility, at 20grams per 1 cup serving which is huge but very filling and at 120 cal for that same amount, this has now became my breakfast in the morning, mixed with some fruit and I'm going to try the honey tomorrow. I can't wait to try the other recipes described on this site either. I love greek food and this just takes me one step closer. I recommend this to anyone trying to watch their calories and their carbs.
I happen to like Fage straight up, but it's even better sparked with tasty add-ins! I mix mine with Splenda-sweetened fruit cooked to a marmalade consistency when i have the time, and
applesauce, baby food fruit,(don't laugh!) or melted jam and some Splenda when I'm time-pushed. Or, in a savory mode, I add dry soup mix to it for an instant dip/dressing for veggies.
It is yummy stuff.
where do you buy Fage yogurt. I live in southern california??
Wow! What an interesting post, and comments! I too was shocked at the amount of people commenting about sprinkling the poison, splenda, over this perfectly good food! I think that's one of the problems in America, is that we have allowed the food industry to (feed us chemicals that) brainwash us into thinking that sweet foods are the norm and its ok to eat them every day, more then once a day. Other countries do not do this! I eat it plain.. Total only, as I do not eat low fat ANYTHING. Read the book Nourishing Traditions. This yogurt is the best yogurt out there! Think, rich, delicious.. Almost tastes like soft creamed cheese.. Would you put splendo on you cream cheese bagel? The flavor is very similar.
Laura: I find Fage at Ralphs all the time.
Nichole: Here's an idea... climb down off your high horse. Your sanctimonious comment is ridiculous and furthermore shame on you for poo-poo-ing people wanting to add Splenda or anything else.
As much as I love Fage and am willing to pay 4x the price of any other yogurt out there, the stuff is practically inedible if you eat it alone as you would a typical yogurt.
You eat it your way, enjoy it and be happy. Live and let live... and leave other people alone.
This is actually the only yogurt I buy. I love it with slivered almonds and a touch of honey.
Ok for those of you that need your yogurt sweet, try some slenda or honey, it's great, or plain frozen fruit. I love this stuff and I used to only eat the flavored yogurt, not anymore, this is the only stuff I eat now. LOVE IT!!!!
I love greek yogurt like Oiko's or Fage but since it is so expensive I stretch it by mixing 4 oz greek yogurt with a 4 oz container of yoplus blackberry pomagranit flavored yogurt. By mixing it I get a half cup of thick creamy yogurt for my evening snack with lots more protien and less carbs. YUM. I live on the West Coast and find Oiko's at Fred Meyer and Fage at Safeway. Has anybody found any coupons?
I am obsessed with Fage. I eat some every day and get my protein that way as I am a lacto-ovo-veg. I add 1 packet of splenda and 1/2 cup of cranberry-orange Galaxy Granola (also a fav of mine). I actually found that you can save about 10 cents a cup if you buy it at whole foods (which adds up if you eat one a day)
I am also addicted to Fage yogurt. I was one of those people who couldn't stand it at first, but loved it the second time around. I buy a bag of frozen mixed berries, and just slice some up with a teaspoon of sugar. Then, I add "fruit n nut" granola from wholefoods on top. You will never go back to the usual Dannon or Yoplait yogurt again.
So, it thought all these comments were VERY funny.. Americans must sweeten everything, we need to look at our behavior.. and SPLENDA of all things, it might as well be rat poisoning, you are completely negating the effects of this nutritious food by putting that chemical on it. I love FAGE, and would never adulterate it with anything.. Plain is the way to go. Every now and then, it's a nice treat to put a little honey on it for a treat for the kids, but NOT on an everyday basis.
