Fage Fat Free Greek Yogurt

Fage Greek Yogurt I recently asked readers to share a low calorie food with us, and got some interesting responses [see them here]. One of the foods listed was Fage Total Greek Yogurt so I thought I would give it a try.

On the strength of the recommendations, I bought a 16 ounce tub in Mrs.Greens Natural Grocer for $5.49 - twice the price of other yogurts - but I reasoned that I planned on eating a lot of yogurt in the week. One week later and most of the yogurt is still in the refrigerator. I am used to the slightly sweet yogurts with some kind of flavor - preferable fruit, but Fage Greek 0% yogurt puts a whole other spin on 'plain' yogurt. It is thick - I'll give it that, but it is slightly sour and acidic and closer to sour cream in taste.

Nutritious Junk just did a review, and she put it nicely when she said, "dont expect a flavorful explosion" and "it doesn't exactly taste like traditional yogurt you may be used to because Greek yogurt tends to be made differently." [link]. She liked it overall, but I can't say the same. I just can't get over the fact that there is no sweetness to it and that it was just like thick sour cream.

One serving is 1 cup or 8 ounces, and has 120 calories, no fat, 20 grams of protein and only 9 grams total carbohydrates from the 9 grams of sugars. The ingredients are simply skim milk and live active yogurt cultures! So it is definitely not bad in terms of nutrition, but I'm sorry to say that I will not be buying this again - unless I need to use yogurt in a smoothie or something. There seems to be quite a following for this yogurt though, so if you have had it, please leave a comment and let us know your thoughts!

I eat this for breakfast most mornings. If you mix in some fresh berries and sliced almonds you cut the bitterness but keep the rich, cream texture. Very filling and yummy!

I do all kinds of stuff with this: sour cream replacement, tsaziki, smoothies, etc. I also like to mix it with a little splenda and cinnamon and serve it with baked apples, or just with a bit of splenda and fresh berries. One of my favorite foods of all time!

I just put mix in peeled, chopped English/seedless cucumbers, garlic, and salt and pepper. There are others ways to make it, I'm sure. I saw someone making it with beets on the BBC the other night and it looked great. The plain Fage is also good if you put a dollop in tomato soup or any kind of spicy stew/soup. MMMM.

This yogurt definitely needs to have some splenda added to it to taste anywhere decent (I actually add 2 packets!)

No, no no! You never eat Fage plain! I eat it every day, but with 2 sachets of Splenda!

Other combos:
1 packet Splenda + Sugar Free jam or jelly

Splenda + a bit of decaf=coffee flavored yogurt.

I get the fat free, too, for 80 cals each.

I love this stuff. For breakfast I stir in a teaspoon of honey, the way I learned to eat yogurt in Spain. Some days I add a teaspoon of sugar and a handful of frozen berries. I also use it as a substitute for sour cream. And now I want to try tzaziki with it. Yum!

I love Fage yogurt, and eat it daily. I add Splenda and blueberries to mine. Yes, you have to add flavor to it yourself. I find it delicious and chock full of protein. I don't think I could go back to other yogurts, as I would find them too artificially sweet.

I can't stand the typical domestic yogurts anymore. They are too sweet and... slimy. I hate the fact they use pectin or geletin to thicken and give the yogurt volume. If I wanted geletin, I'd buy jell-o.

For the commenter that said it's costing a fortune eating fage, try making your own yogurt. I've done it, and it's shockingly easy. You just need to have a good food thermometer to keep the temp at an optimal level. After the yogurt reaches your desired tartness, you can strain the yogurt to get that thick custerdy consistancy. It came pretty close the last time I did it

Who ever misled you to beleive that yogurt was meant to be sweet? It is only in this country that everything we put in our mouths has to be suggar ladden in order for it to be accpetable. Our taste buds have been over-exposed to sugar and are now incapable of experiencing the amazing nuances in the avrying levels of natural tastes in food as it is truly meant to be experienced.

I can't get enough of the stuff. I usually buy the 2%, but whatever I buy, I put it into a sieve on top of a bowl then in the refrigerator and just leave it there. It gets thicker and thicker, almost like mascarpone cheese. I love it plain, but for breakfast I cut up strawberries and mix them in. I wish it wasn't so expensive though!

FAGE Yogurt is a wonderful product. I am lactose intolerant and I can't eat yogurt, that is until I found out about FAGE. I don't even have to use a Lactase Enzyme caplet with FAGE. I eat the 0% with Trader Joe's Apricot sauce. I wish FAGE had the 5.3oz with honey combo in the 0% instead of Total fat. It's worth the money. It's a meal in itself, especially for breakfast or lunch. I am a senior and this product helps me to stay "regular". . .if you know what I mean.

I can't eat Fage plain either...but with a bit of blueberry jam mixed in, it becomes a yummy dessert! Another great option is stirring in some sugar-free dry pudding mix; this thickens up the yogurt even more, making it almost like cheesecake. You're not going to find a high protein content like this with any other yogurt!

This stuff is fantastic and versatile. I like it as a breakfast or as a desert with honey or fruit or both. I don't understand how anyone could like the American varieties. I can't even call them yogurt. They are mostly corn syrup and gelatin. This is very healthy for your digestive system. I get it at a co-op and it has a better price than some larger stores. It be nice if it was cheaper, but it's not that well known. It should be!!!! Anyways, it has a fantastic texture and goes great with honey and fresh fruit. Whenever I buy it it's hard not to eat it all in a day.

If you don't like sour cream, you would not like this. If you have a sweet tooth, cannot consider a meal complete without dessert, would rather snack on cookies than pretzels, cannot imagine drinking unsweetened ice tea, then add fruit or honey/sweeteners to fage, as has been described by many posters so far. I think of this is another dip for whole wheat pita, up there with hummus tahini baba ghanoush etc. I suggest adding salt, garlic, paprika, and most importantly crumble some fresh or dried rosemary in there, and let sit to absorb the flavor. Then serve with some sprinkled pine nuts and a dash of olive oil on top, alongside other mediterranean dips, olives, etc.

I agree with Gina - I have no interest in American yogurt anymore. A little honey and some diced apples. I also sprinkle in some flax seeds to get some omega-3. I think the savory ideas - cucumbers, dill and salt/pepper sound great, too - like with cottage cheese.

I love this yogurt--it's pretty much a breakfast staple for me. As others have said, it does require a little 'getting used to,' but it's extremely versatile and nutritious. I think it tastes amazing when mixed with frozen fruit (thawed slightly), sliced nuts, cinnamon, sugar-free maple syrup, etc. The fact that it boasts so much protein is great, too--it definitely helps me stay full until lunch.

hey, did you guys know you can make your own "greeked" yogurt?
just buy (or make) some regular plain yogurt, and plop some (over a jar) in some cheesecloth, or (what I use, it's easier) a coffee filter in a funnel, and leave it a few hours or overnight in the fridge. Voila! Delicious greek yogurt!
I still buy Fage though, because it's fast and I love to sweeten it and dip strawberries in it. Yum!

Are you people NUTS!? FAGE (2%+) has to be the most amazing food I've ever eaten and YES sometimes I do dip into it PLAIN! It has such a rich, creamy, natural flavor, apparently it's only appreciated by very discriminating palates! I have no problem dropping near $30/week on Fage products. I buy the large 2% tubs and put honey on it and buy the individual strawberry packs. I will eat Fage sometimes more than twice a day. I love FAGE!

I really dislike sweet yogurts, so I never ate them. Now, I have this wonderful product with all its nutritional values every day. I think this is the best yogurt ever. Plus, I love that this is so creamy. Most of the yogurts on the shelf are more liquid. This is my breakfast for every day. I eat it with fresh blueberries or strawberries. I can add cinnamon, anything I like. I can even eat it plain, and I still like it. I looked on the internet, and they have this product with fruit: http://www.fage.gr/page/default.asp?id=428&la=2
I have not seen it on the shelves though. Anyway, thumbs up for this yogurt!

WHAT THE HECK? Don't people realize "plain" is the way yogurt has been eaten for millenia? Why is it that in non-yogurt-eating societies like this, we feel the need to sweeten everything up? (with Splenda, a Carcinogen, nonetheless).

Take it from me (and the rest of the world) Plain Yogurt is delicious and nutritious, if you add anything, add salt!

Fage is the "real" way yogurt is suppose to be. As a little girl my grandmother always made homemade yogurt..When I discovered Fage, it brought it back to me. Unfortunalty, sugar has been added to everything in our foods..Yogurt was not made to taste "sweet" It is yogurt, not ice cream..The true Mediterranean diet is the heathliest diet in the world..only when people "Americanize and supersize" with sugars and fats does it become what it was not meant to be...The sugar and fruit yogurts are not real yogurts.. When in Greece last summer we ate yogurt every day..We actually talked about how happy we were that we now had Fage to eat at home, because it is truly the best, just like in Greece.. We are having a Brunch for Mother's Day at our church and I know the Fage will be the hit of the foods. The people in my family and thousands of families who ate the healthy "unaltered" Mediterranean diet all those years died in their 90's from old age..enough said.....
