Amys Organic Toaster Pops
This review was done by Ann H. In her words, "I am a 20 year old, 3rd year Marketing student at the University of Southern Lousiana, and a bonifide healthy product foodie! One of my favorite things to do is go to the grocery store and stroll through the aisles looking for the newest and most unique healthy products on the market. My ultimate goal is to work in the marketing and development department of a healthy food company, like Amy's or Kashi."

Amys Organic Toaster PopsOk, I will admit a dirty little secret - I love pop tarts - they are my guilty pleasure! After a long night of studying for a test, there is nothing I crave more than a frosted strawberry pop tart, so when I was browsing through the freezer aisle last week and saw Amy's Strawberry Toaster Pops, I had to give them a try. I was pretty excited by the idea that the folks at Amy's might have solved the problem of the guilt I feel after indulging in my favorite sugary, artificially flavored, regular strawberry pop tarts. While the Amy's version does not have icing and sprinkles (a girl can't have everything she wants!), it is chock-full of healthy organic ingredients such as, organic wheat flour with organic oat bran and what germ, and organic strawberry puree. It is also vegan and dairy free and there are no artificial ingredients.

I opened the box and took out 2 of the Toaster Pops (the serving size is one tart but that just isn't enough for me). Appearance- wise, they are pretty much the same shape and size of regular pop tarts, just with a wheat crust and sans icing. The instructions on the box say to put the Pops in the toaster on the lowest setting until golden brown and heated. I have NEVER used the lowest setting because I am usually in a hurry and I want the food done FAST, but I followed the instructions on the box so that I could get an accurate review of the product. Well, I waited, and waited, and waited for the darn things to cook. I don't know if it was my toaster or what, but it took 4 cycles on the lowest setting for them to get brown and hot.

I broke off a piece from the corner of the first Toaster Pop in order to taste just the crust. It is definitely not the sugary, floury, crumbly taste and texture of a regular pop tart! The Amy's pops have a kind of, well ... wheat taste, but not in a bad way - more in a way that makes you feel like you're eating something healthy. The next piece I took was getting into the "meat" of the Pop where all the strawberry filling lies ... YUM yummy tres magnifique! It is made with "lightly sweetened California strawberries" and tastes like fresh made strawberry jam which is pleasantly sweet - not like the sugary clumpy stuff that you sometimes encounter with regular pop tarts. And, the pop is LOADED with the California strawberry puree!

The only complaint I have is that the crust cooks inconsistently. In some parts it was crunchy and crispy, in some parts kind of soggy, and in some parts chewy. Now if you are looking for a product that tastes exactly like the sugary, cavity inducing regular pop tarts, then this is not it. But Amy's Strawberry Toaster Pops are a yummy and health-ier substitute. The serving size is 1 pop tart, which has 150 calories, 3.5 grams of total fat but no saturated or trans fat, 4 grams protein and 26 grams total carbohydrates which includes 1 gram of fiber and 8 grams of sugars.

For all of you parents, these would be a good alternative for your kiddies AND, if you put some low-fat cream cheese on them, they won't even miss the frosting! I think I will definitely be switching to these in lieu of my regular pop tarts (well, maybe I’ll just limit myself to having the regular stuff after extremely tough and stressful situations where I just NEED something totally artificial and bad for me!). I bought the Amys Organic Toaster Pops at Albertsons for $2.49 and one box comes with 6 Toaster Pops.

SO FUNNY that this review just went up! I tried the Amy's Apple Pops last week for the first time and totally fell in love. It was like having a small apple pie every morning. Yum!
