Veat Vegetarian Chicken Breast

Veat The label says "high in soy protein, fully cooked, eats like chicken, cholesterol free." I say, "Veat does not taste like chicken but tastes like meat (sort of)." The taste is very hard to describe, in fact it has no obvious taste which is actually a good thing. I seasoned up my Veat (Vegetarian Meat), like I would meat, and while there are obvious differences, I think non vegetarians (like myself) would really enjoy this. Right out the package, it's not much to look at. When it's cooked it is a bit softer than any chicken breast I have ever eaten, also comes out a bit dry, but so does my boneless chicken breast and that's what gravy/sauce is for. It also comes apart very easily, so be careful not to cook it too much. Veat is also pre-cooked so that makes for quick meal preparation.

The nutrition is not bad at all. There are 90 calories in a 50 gram serving size, which is about 1/4 of the Veat. There is not much fat, only 3 grams total and 1 gram saturated, not too much sodium at 280 mg, which is 12% of the recommended daily amount, but not much fiber either with less than 1 gram, but there are 11 grams of protein.

One more way in which veat cannot compare to chicken breast - the price. A 7ounce (a little less than 1/2 pound), 200 gram portion of Veat cost $4.69 from Mrs. Green's Natural Grocer. You can get a half pound boneless and skinless chicken breast for $3.50 - usually less. Overall I like this product. I think it makes a great tasting meat substitute.

I'm curious as to what happened to this product. I've used it for the past 5 years and all the sudden no where I originally bought it sells it anymore (not just wholefoods!). Did something happen to the product or company? I can't find anything.

I have used veat for at least l0 years first the mock salmon one disappeared from the shelves at Whole Foods and now the chicken breast is gone. The grocery managers at the health food stores I shop in have said that the distributors are not carrying the product anymore. I believe Van's is the company that makes the product, but I have not been able to find out anything more about it.

I have searched far and wide to buy Veat...in stores or online, so far no luck. The only place I had some luck was VitaNet Online, they have packs of 12, but get this, they don't ship frozen orders from Ohio! I asked if they would send it and I would take the risk, and they couldn't do it. Next, the only other option was their distributor, so they said United Natural Foods was their supplier, and their website is only for stores, but they mentioned buying clubs. I emailed them asking for buying clubs in Philadelphia...we'll see what happens. Anyone else with luck?

I too have been a long time fan of Veat products - both the breast and the salmon and have been unable to find it anymore...on the EAST COAST. I talked to a company rep (and I'm not sure how truthful the information was) who stated that the company will no longer be making the product available on the East Coast although it's still available on the West. I have no idea why this is but it's really frustrating as it's one of the best meat subsitutes I've found.

Any one else have any other information??

I order Veat by the case from my health food store, Food Fantasies, in Springfield, IL. Their distributor is Tree of Life, which is a very big company. Find out which retailers use Tree of Life in your area, and order your Veat through them. (Tree of Life carries Veat Gourmet Bites, the Fillet, and the Nuggets, but not the Breast.)

But it looks to me like Veat is on life-support. If the Whole Foods market were restored, I think the picture would look much better.

Would anybody be interested in helping lauch a Vegetarian campaign to persuade Whole Foods to restore Veat?

I love Veat Gourmet Bites...I can still get Veat at my local grocery store (as of a week a go)...as for whole foods, you can normally go to the customer service area and request any product. Ask family and follow vegetarians for their help. I haven't been to the local whole foods in like a month to buy vegetarian items I can't get here.

Seriously, ask customer service they will either get it or they should give you a reason.
