Trader Joes Dry Roasted Edamame
On a recent trip to Trader Joe's, I came across their "Dry Roasted Lightly Salted Edamame" snack. Edamame is the same thing as soybeans, and in this case, the beans have been removed from the pod and dry roasted, in a manner similar to peanuts. What really drew me in was the fact that something - anything - in Trader Joe's only costs 99 cents (even chewing gum is $1.29). The lightly salted edamame was crunchy, crispy, and I really, really liked it. The taste was a teeny tiny bit different from the more popular nuts such as peanuts, but I honestly slightly preferred the lighter tasting edamame to peanuts - AND I certainly preferred the price. I also must confess that I am a bit of a salt addict. I tend to dislike 'lightly salted' foods, BUT the light salt goes very well with the light taste and feel of the edamame.
The table below compares the nutrition facts of one serving of Trader Joes Lightly Salted Dry Roasted Edamame (30 grams) vs. Planters Lightly Salted Dry Roasted Peanuts (28 grams).
|
Edamame | Peanuts |
| Calories | 140 | 170 |
| Total Fat (% daily value) | 9 | 22 |
| Sat Fat (g) | 1 | 2 |
| Sodium (mg) | 5 | 95 |
| Fiber (g) | 4 | 2 |
| Protein (g) | 14 | 8 |
| Iron (%) | 20 | 2 |
One serving is a 1/4 cup or 30 grams (which is actually measured out in the picture). I thought that 1/4 cup wasn't much at all, but when I actually measured it out, there was certainly enough for a snack. It is also an excellent source of fiber and protein! This particular brand was purchased at Trader Joes (a 5.5 ounce bag), but I'm sure there are other brands available in stores. The Seapoint Farms brand is available online [link] - this is a non genetically modified brand. There is no information on the Trader Joes Edamame regarding whether it uses genetically modified soybeans (81% of the World's soybeans are GM).

I work at TRader Joe's and these are one of my favorite products! Thanks for spreading the word because not too many people know about them. I persoanlly like these better than the Seapoint Farms one- they taste fresher. ~Michelle
Thanks for commenting Michelle! I love the stuff at Trader Joes :0)
I sure hope there is a TJoe's close to where I just moved, as I will be very, very sad without him near. I will definitely pick some of these up next time!
Alas, I tried very hard to like TJ's dry roasted edamame. I bought, and eventually consumed, several packages when I first noticed them in the summer of 2005. I think they're just too crunchy for me and too lacking in the mouth-feel of fattier snacks. I'm apparently not alone in my tepid response to the stuff. I took a package on a car-camping trip in Yosemite in August 2005--this was with a group of granola-eating tree-hugging friends, mind you, and the soy nuts were, shall we say, not popular around the campfire . . . which is why they were in the bear box at around 9 p.m. when we saw that a bear had discovered that someone (not me!) had failed to latch the box properly. As we banged our pots and pans and made all kinds of racket to scare the bear away, she dragged my entire bag of food for the weekend into the woods and proceeded to consume or at least slobber all over everything from jerky (not a trace of that left) to coffee bags (mostly just mauled). The soy nuts, however, we retrieved from the woods completely intact except for a couple of claw holes in the bag where the bear got one sniff and judged them to be "not food." That's about my judgment too. Sorry!
I love TJ's dry roasted Edamame. I could eat them every day. My favorite thing about it is that it's such a great source of vegetarian protein but reletively low in calories.
where have all the dry roasted edamame gone? No more at T.J's
TJ is no longer carrying the dry roasted edamame. They said that they need to find a new distributor. Does anyone have info on this?
Bad news! They have been discontinued from Trader Joes. Someone please tell me where to get these. sherif@cox.net
thanks
If the buyer for Traders Joes is reading this PLEASE, PLEASE, hurry and get the Edamames back. I am having severe withdrawal problems. Those are the absolute best snack ever.
Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure whether what I've found are exactly the same, but going by the name and the nutritional info, you can get these edamame (or something very similar) from Harris Teeter!
I work for trader joes and this is my favorite snack ever. I came online to find out where to get some and was very surprised to see that others are also addicted. We are discontinuing everything that comes directly from China, so they now cover them with chocolate here in the US in order to get by this. It is not the same! Any info on where to get them would be great.....I cannot even find them in asian markets....
I used to buy these and send them to my sister who lives on the east coast. I finally found something similar. Best price I've found is at REI. http://www.rei.com/product/718288
well I finally found them again..Tradet Joe's no longer carries them but the Seapoint Farms brand is everywhere ...even on their website www.seapointfarms.com and costco, whole foods, cost plus, amazon.com,and a bunch of health foods stores in Cali and NY that I have seen so far....
I buy mine by the pound at Sprouts. Roasted with sea salt...yummy.
Well, Costco just discontinued selling Seapoint Farms dry roasted edamame. I haven't been able to find out why. Sad as they charged only $6-7 per canister; Seapoint charges $20-30 on their website.

I go to my local farmers market to buy this delicious snack ($2 for 1/2 lb!) but there might be other options at your organic grocer - like Whole Foods.
TJ doesn't carry it any longer
